Cut-paper collage 5.5" x 8.8" (14 x 22 cm) with acrylic paint.

A friend suggested I make a collage referring to the silly old movie "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes." Not all the bacteria here cause disease, but many do--shigella, pertussis, staphylococcus, meningococcus, and others.

The collage is an old piece from when I was still in flickr (ten years ago) called:
'Solo for dancing-feet-harmonium with bowler hat and duchess slipper'.
I am trying to make a diorama based on it, let's see.
The situation in my country and elsewhere is such that the only way to continue living is recognition and acceptance of the absurd.

I don't do this often--make a collage, then just plop a big image on it. But in this case I couldn't resist. Yellow & blue background from a painting by Mark Rothko. Sorry, I don't know who took the photo of the iceberg.

The dimensions of this collage allow you to appreciate how tiny the writing by Robert Walser is, reproduced in its actual size. It's in German, but is said to be hard for even native Germans to read.

Actually, it's not just about the strange blue thing, from a science fiction illustration by Jim Burns. It's also about the background, from a photograph of dinosaur bone by Giraud Foster & Norman Barker. I seem to be doing a fossil series.

Cut-paper collage. Woman with yellow from a painting by Noah Davis. Words from an artwork by L. Pope. Fossil photographed by Giraud Foster & Norman Barker. It's Sphenophyllum, a once-ubiquitous creeping plant, related to horsetails, that went extinct shortly after the Carboniferous period.

This collage was inspired by this time when we go everywhere with masks on, so our facial expressions come only through our eyes. I'm not sure what we're learning, but maybe it includes the fact that we need closeness, we need each other's faces, hands & bodies, more than we knew we did.

Background from paintings by Gerhard Richter, Joe Overstreet, and Howard Hodgkin.. Whales from paintings by Georges Braque, Ter Brugghen,, Robert Campin, Paul Cézanne, John Constable, Eric Heckel, and Katsushika Hokusai.

I've been distracted away from art recently, but I did find an inspiring art book: Unpainted to the Last: Moby-Dick and Twentieth Century American Art by Elizabeth A. Schultz. I was surprised that abstract expressionists were inspired by my favorite novel! Their whales weren't very realistic, so I felt free to make mine that way.

The rock at top center is chalcopyrite, a sulfide of copper and iron. The gems are rubies. Sorry, I don't know anything about the blue artifact, except that it's ancient.
