A small Pacific Gas & Electric reservoir in the upper reaches of the South Yuba River, on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada. The fires haven't reached here yet, anyway. It's suspected that a spark from PG&E's equipment triggered the Dixie Fire, which is raging mostly out of control about 30 miles northwest. The insets show some other views in the vicinity, near the dam.

Tahoe Meadows and Washoe Lake

View southeasterly from Relay Peak, at 10,338 ft/3151 m the highest point on the Tahoe Rim Trail (TRT). (The trail runs directly over the peak!) It's on the northeast side of Lake Tahoe in the Carson Range, on the Nevada (east) side. Tahoe Meadows is the prominent low area, highlighted with fall colors, in the foreground. It's a popular hiking area when not snow-covered; and a popular snow-play area in the winter! We accessed the TRT from a trailhead off Tahoe Meadows. The highway visible here and there on this side is Nevada SR 431, the Mt. Rose Highway, and the most direct route from Reno to Lake Tahoe. The lake partly visible thru the gap beyond is Washoe Lake, in Washoe Valley, where I live. The ranks of mountain ranges extending out beyond are in Nevada and show the typical topography of the Basin and Range.

A pretty glacial lake on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) about 6 miles (10 km) south of the Ebbetts Pass trailhead, where California SR 4 crosses the Sierra Nevada. The PCT can be seen here and there across the lake, heading into the drainage at the left. The standing dead trees were probably drowned by high water levels in the last few years. The prominent peak on the right is actually a double peak, the nearer, unnamed peak having an elevation of 10,824 ft/3299 m and the farther peak, which is mostly hidden, being Highland Peak (10,935 ft/3333 m). The prominent conical peak off to the left is Silver Peak (10,772 ft/3283 m). The lake elevation is just under 9000 ft/2743 m. This view is looking north; the insert (upper left) shows a northeasterly view from off the PCT to the right. There are also some other views of the lake in the adjacent photos.

The PCT can be seen crossing the slope immediately across the lake. A patch of snow below and to the left of the small skylined conical peak is now gone, here at the end of September (outline). The snow patch was there at the beginning of August (insert at top left). We came in to Noble Lake from the north in early August, and then for this trip came in from the south, over a saddle that's just off the pic to the right. Elevation of the lake is just under 9000 ft/2743 m. There are some other views of the lake in the adjacent photos.

Tahoe Rim Trail going around Rose Knob Peak, in the Mt. Rose Wilderness area, Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, Nevada. Looking southwest over Lake Tahoe; the trail elevation here is about 9400 ft/2865 m. The prominent peninsula on the left is State Line Point. By complete happenstance the California-Nevada boundary nearly bisects the peninsula. The deepest point in the lake, at 1645 ft/501 m, is just off State Line Point. The inset shows the view from the point ahead where the trail curves around the mountain.

Well, yes. "Lake" is kind of a stretch--Gray "Pond", maybe! But it _is_ a source of perennial surface water, and thus a critical resource for wildlife, in this overall very dry mountain range. The lake's elevation is 9043 ft/2756 m and it's off the Tahoe Rim trail (TRT), in Nevada's Mt. Rose Wilderness area within the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. Two trails access the lake from the TRT, thru saddles to the south and east, and so you can do a loop by the lake from off the trail. The right inset shows a view looking this way, from up in that talus slope; the left inset is a view off to the right of this pic.
Why "Gray" Lake? It's hardly gray! Dunno, actually, but I suspect it may come from that slope of broken gray rhyolite talus directly ahead. The slope is on the flanks of Rose Knob Peak (9710 ft/ 2960 m).
