But not only in a street, pretty much anywhere that is a public space. The group is supposed to be limited to photographs taken in the UK, but since it's not always possible to tell, the enforcement action tends to be slack. Street photography is not well defined and anyway it keeps being redefined - for example, we thought we knew what it was until Garry Winogrand came along and changed our perception. But there are some generally accepted things about street photography. It always includes people. You don't usually photograph people whom you know. You don't ask people to pose, because that makes it a portrait. You don't therefore usually ask for permission to photograph people. You attempt to show some interesting facet of human behaviour. You keep an eye for what might in future be of historic interest. You don't humiliate anybody. But getting right up close with a wide-angle lens seems to be acceptable, and taking pictures from afar with a telephoto suggests at best a lack of confidence and at worst being voyeuristic. All the guidelines itemised above are routinely ignored. All the reservations concerning appropriate behaviour are hotly disputed. So, you work it out for yourself, and show us what you can achieve. By the way, it doesn't have to be black-and-white. It doesn't even have to be in focus.
