The Vulcan, launched in 1819, was the first all iron-hulled vessel (boat) to be built. It was designed as a horse-drawn passenger barge for use on the Scottish canals. Quoted from Wikipedia.

A full‑scale replica of the Vulcan was built in 1988 in Glasgow and is the vessel now displayed at Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life.

In 2014, after restoration work, the replica was returned to the Monkland Canal as part of a major heritage project celebrating the area’s industrial history. The project highlighted the Vulcan’s role in transforming Scottish shipbuilding and canal transport.

The raised display at Summerlee allows visitors to see the hull form and construction method that made the original vessel so revolutionary.

The original construction drawings and technical documentation for the Vulcan are held within the collections of the Scottish Maritime Museum in Dumbarton.

Narrowboats Victoria and Alton at the 2016 Bollington boat & folk event on the Macclesfield Canal. These two motor boats were still at work carrying fuels, mainly supplying boaters along the waterways in the area.

Sutton Weaver swing bridge on the Weaver Navigation carries the A56 over the river. It was completed in 1926 and has seen much repair and refurbishment in recent years.

Compressed chlorine storage at the INOVYN ChlorVinyls Limited Rocksavage chemical works. This plant mainly produces chlorine, caustic soda and chlorinated derivatives. I believe that these spheres are no longer used.

The signal was once used to control vessels using Weston Marsh Lock which links the Weaver Naviagation to the Manchester Ship Canal. The Weston Canal running across the image linked the Weaver to the docks at Weston Point and also the now derelict Runcorn and Weston Canal.

As we see here, it is possible to float and walk over the aquaduct. It must be quite a thrill paddling along that side as the drop down was pretty scary. A guide was taking this group over and I would think he had given many warnings and instructions of how to behave here, especially no standing up or trying to pull oneself up onto the edge. Even for the walkers, when passing other people one had to be careful you did not fall into the canal.
The PiP shows telephoto view from this side, at the start/finish of the aqueduct with the much more usual narrow canal boat crossing.

This is one of the last remaining corrugated iron boathouses on the Macclesfield Canal. These structures were common from the small skiff type of the early 20th century to the ones that held cabin cruisers in later years. The last ones are to be seen on the High Lane Arm which is leased to the North Cheshire Cruising Club. They are disappearing because they are too small to accommodate the modern steel narrowboats that are in the majority today.

The Lostock Sustainable Energy Plant (LSEP) is an Energy from Waste facility which is currently under construction at the Lostock Works site near Northwich in Cheshire, formerly the coal fired power station for Lostock Works. It will export 69.9MW of electricity to the grid using residual waste (the waste material remaining once materials that can be recycled have been removed) as a fuel. It was was due to open in 2025 but is running behind schedule.

LSEP Ltd is a joint venture between Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and FCC Environment.
