A flavour of the light railways used in World War 1 at the Pages Park shed on the Leighton Buzzard Light Railway. On the left is War Department Light Railways 303 - Hunslet 1215 of 1916. On the right is Baldwin built British War Department locomotive 778. Built in 1917 this locomotive is one of four survivors in the UK of the total of 495 delivered by Baldwin.

The Jiayang coal railway was a rare survivor of a narrow gauge line that continued to serves a whole community. The recent development of new roads in the area it serves has reduced its significance but it has renewed itself as a tourist line.

Back when the coal mines were still operating a passenger service is departing from the reversing point at Mifengyang. The pointsman is reaching to remove the green signal flag from its holder.

'High Peak' is a Co-Co diesel hydraulic shunter built by Vollert (O2/013 2013) and operated by Tarmac plc at Tunstead Quarry. It is one of only two Vollert built locos imported into the UK. Behind is one of the three 0-6-0 diesel hydraulic locomotives at Tunstead.

Alan Keef No.4 in the shed at the Lindow Moss peat farm in May 1985. At the time the site was being operated by Country Kitchen Foods Ltd with the peat being used for growing mushrooms. I never saw this locomotive out on the line. It arrived new in 1979. In the background is Lister 52528.

Orenstein & Koppel 5662 of 1912 was sold to a company in Argentina and may have worked there in the sugar industry. It arrived in the UK in 2003 having languished out of use since at least the 1980s and eventually came to Apedale via Statfold Barn in May 2014. Restoration was completed at Apedale and the loco entered traffic in 2022. It is seen here ready for work at the late December gala on the Apedale Valley Light Railway.

C2 203 on the turning triangle at the terminus of the Suiling forestry railway. This was a very long line with several branches and almost entirely steam operated when I visited in 1992.

This locomotive out on the field railway during the 2025 winter gala at Apedale is Simplex Mechanical Handling 40SD516 of 1979. It was delivered to Severn Trent Water at its Minworth sewage works and worked there until January 1989 after which it was placed in storage until transferred to the Moseley Railway Trust in August 2002.

JS 6544 earns its keep at the head of the morning mixed train on the Yuanbaoshan Coal Railway as it heads for the mine at Fengshuigou. The empty coal wagons were at the rear.

Trainloads of peat in the arrival sidings at the Edenderry power station in County Offaly.
