A member of the team is watching the road from on top of the tender as JS 5741 heads back to Hailar having deposited wagons at a nearby industrial premises. The locomotive was one of two station pilots that day. The shunter appears to be sitting on the front buffer beam.

Steam on the Chinese main lines was still commonplace way back in autumn 1983 & I spent 3 weeks on a Railway Transport & Photography tour savouring it.

These China Railways QJ 2-10-2 locomotives add their contributions to the general early morning fug hanging over Harbin engine shed as they are prepared for the road.

Winter lasts a long time in North-East China and this image was taken in mid-April. The previous day had seen bright warm sunshine! A C2 0-8-0 locomotive works hard up the last few metres to the summit of the Huanan Coal Railway taking the empties back to the coal loading point. All gone now of course.

Early morning light as consecutively numbered QJs 7038 and 7037 storm up the west side of the Jinpeng Pass. It was always worth getting up early on the Jitong Railway.

A study of a QJ after preparation for work at the junction depot at Suihua in Heilongjiang, China. This was a very busy location with locomotives being changed on most of the trains passing here. The QJs in the area were coupled with eight wheel tenders rather than the twelve wheel version used for longer distance services.

QJ class 2-10-2 locomotives nos 7163 and 7143 arrive with a westbound freight at Lindong which is a small town halfway between Chabuga and Daban on the Jitong railway. The town is actually situated a couple of miles from the station where a small community has developed along with a zinc smelting plant. Freight trains often stopped here to take water and to shunt the sidings.

The Jiayang coal railway was a rare survivor of a narrow gauge line that continued to serves a whole community. The recent development of new roads in the area it serves has reduced its significance but it has renewed itself as a tourist line.

Back when the coal mines were still operating a passenger service is departing from the reversing point at Mifengyang. The pointsman is reaching to remove the green signal flag from its holder.

QJ 2879 on passenger duties at Modaoshi horseshoe curve with a train for Suifenhe. The train was visible for around half an hour as it climbed the hill.

C2 203 on the turning triangle at the terminus of the Suiling forestry railway. This was a very long line with several branches and almost entirely steam operated when I visited in 1992.

JS 6544 earns its keep at the head of the morning mixed train on the Yuanbaoshan Coal Railway as it heads for the mine at Fengshuigou. The empty coal wagons were at the rear.
