Der Seiteneingang zum Carlswerk in Mägdesprung im Harz wird durch eine sehr schöne Trockenmauer eingefasst. In der Detailaufnahme ist sehr gut zu erkennen, wie viele verschiedene Steine aufwändig geschichtet wurden.

This heap of stones used to be the sharp corner where two walls joined.
Couldn't decide if it had been a barn, another type of building. or just field walls.

Sadly, I suspect it will be some years before the narrow-gauge [2ft] South Tynedale Railway re-opens this part of the Alston Branch.

e2a [Oct 2025] - the STR - or rather, a specialised rope access contractor - has just completed some repairs to this, after a few stones fell out from one of the spandrel walls.

A nicely rebuilt gate-end or wall-head. Note the use of very large stones to keep the structure stable. Also note that the wall is not capped by coping stones, as it is still being used as a clearance or consumption wall, ie one built of stones cleared from the enclosed fields. The gateway and the track / footpath I am standing on are covered in cobbles - medium sized stones - used to reinforce the surface in wet weather, especially as this is a well-walked route.

Spotted just off the A689 [Alston to Brampton] on our way to Hickins' for some food.
The fence is also providing somewhere to hang the hay !
The hay patch on the ground has two sets of lambs and one ewe, the other mum is the one much closer to the camera.

First lambs I've seen in 2024.

Pollarded trees next to a small beck in the Lake District.
Some of the Herdwicks are / have been browsing the bark off the cut branches.

The wall nearest the beck needs rebuilding as it appears partially collapsed - some of the other dry stone walls appear to be "clearance" walls - that is, used as a safe place to put stones picked off the fields.

T4 aka Tunnel Mawr - the longest tunnel at 924 ft [280m] and curved.
Looking south, so this is the northern portal. Note the substantial retaining wall and the little "layby" - another good place for a sit & a snack.
Walking through this wasn't especially pleasant if you didn't like dark holes ...

I was particularly taken with the orange & black pansies. I'll be looking out for seeds/plants next year.

The tub, a "half-barrel" needs some screws / coach bolts to hold the iron straps in place, otherwise the contents will eventually force the staves apart.

Turning the corner - looking back - onto the start of the path up to the Castle.
I suspect that corner stone in the wall was originally up on the keep, in a similar corner position.

Cnicht is a mountain in North Wales. There used to be a lot of slate mines in the area, and the slate waste was ideal for jobs like building this fence!

Spring daffodils, followed in a few weeks by Monbretia, grow at the base of this dry stone wall.

I really wanted to get another foot [30cm] of height, but I was already short of suitable facing stones, and effectively I "robbed" another section to gain the amount of extra height already achieved.

A composite of Northumbrian & Pennine versions of dry stone walling methods.

I would like to have added a little more height, but I was running out of suitable stones. I had to be parsimonious with the "throughs" in order to have enough "copes" [the top ones] and even then I had to lay them over a bit to manage to deal with the full length of this section. Probably my inexperience as this is the first wall I've built with these methods & materials.

The area immediately adjacent on the far side of the wall, is a "wetland" / boggy area with a small pond. Although the grass has been cut, I have yet to trim the edge by the wall and the whole area is still in "winter mode".

The whole of this cottage [Tŷ Hyll] is largely built from large boulders, with no mortar. This end wall is actually the chimney!

Do a very nice cream tea, and with plenty of bees to watch ... I was convinced one set of bumble bees were living in the gap to the top right hand corner of the boulder without moss [see "note" on the image].

These buildings are part of the remains of Boot Station, primarily the offices for the mine traffic. The passenger station is somewhat further away from the camera.
The main 3ft gauge track-bed ran along the lower level at the far left.
