Northern Class 158 dmu 158859 makes a flying start with the 1153 departure to Doncaster. The shot is very ordinary but affords a view of part of the imposing trainshed at Hull Paragon station, a welcome sight in an age when so many stations have been, in one way or another, stripped of their character and their architectural heritage impaired or obscured.

Photography at stations these days can be challenging and that is very frustrating on a special visit. However, I always carry a compact camera and it is hard to imagine one better or more agile than the Panasonic TZ70. Thus equipped I was able to take advantage of a limited sight line landside as it were.

ScotRail Class 43 HST power car 43181 was at Aberdeen.

Unloved, even derided, in service especially with Northern Rail, Class 142 Pacers have been snapped up by preserved railways. You can see the sense in having a basic but serviceable dmu to run.

DMS 55564 of unit no. 142023 is seen at Marsh Mills, Plym Valley Railway in this highly contre-jour shot.

As restrictions continue and we crawl on hands and knees towards various milestones, I have turned again to my archive. On previous occasions, I decided not to scan certain pictures because of quality, composition or lack of accompanying information. Over recent years, I have improved my editing techniques (you might not agree) and I can better recover some of my older images even if the composition is not always what I would accept today.

This really is a classic memory from nearly 40 years ago (as I post). Class 121 Pressed Steel MBS was introduced as a single car (W55035) in 1960 and was seen its role as ADB975659*, a route learning car at Marsh Junction, Bristol.

*The 1981 Ian Allan Combined Volume notes this as TDB975659 but this is not consistent with my notes from the time. It is also recorded by other Flickr users as ADB975659.

I was at Bedford station to see the arrival of the then new 315807 which was on training runs following the recent electrification between St Pancras and Bedford. Before it arrived at Bedford, prototype lightweight dmu 140001 left the sidings for a northbound run.

The very restrictions I refer to above have so far prevented me from seeing the innovative and attractive Class 230 in action on the Bedford to Bletchley line. Nearly 40 years ago (as I post), Class 105 Cravens dmu M56149+M50387 was seen approaching Lidlington from Bletchley.

There continues to be at Eastleigh a remarkable variety of motive power and other stock although what is visible on any given day varies quite a lot and the new fence featured in this picture has made photography even more difficult. Much of what goes on at Eastleigh is of historical note and involves changes of liveries or even use and so is particularly worthy of a record shot. There are currently a number of former Northern Rail Class 142 Pacers there and one such is 142007. Nearer to the camera is DMSL 55598.
