A bay-and-gable house and a modern version of an Ontario Gothic house side by each in Kensingtion Market, Toronto, in 2012. Fong On Foods is still there.

The locks at Middlewood once took the Manchester Bolton and Bury Canal down to a junction with the River Irwell. After abandonment of the canal it was filled-in through this area and it was thought that the canal was lost for ever. However, in 2007 redevelopment of the derelict area began and the reinstatement of the canal was part of the scheme.

Today the canal is navigable up two locks and through the development to a basin adjacent to the railway across the old alignment. This scene shows the new and vibrant place that this area has become, with apartment blocks both completed and being built. There was an arts event later in the day with hundreds of people attending and enjoying the sunshine alongside the revitalised waterway.

I take it that's a painting of a streetcar you can see in the window of Tangle Gallery (PiP centre right). There are no streetcars on this street (Harbord) and no sidestreet there for one to be coming down,

The bay-and-gable is another domestic architectural style that many consider unique to Toronto, although I have seen a photo of a similar example from Northern Ontario. Anyway, a bay and gable is a Gothic Revival house with a door on one side and a bay window on the other that rises two-and-a-half storeys into a gable. This one retains its original gingerbread in the gable, which is increasingly rare, for understandable reasons. Its mirror-image neighbour has lost its. The Richardsonian-style porch is looking better than most such surviving porches in Toronto -- usually the pillars and piers splay outward, A lot of these porches have been replaced by wrought-iron ones or just removed.

There was a craze in Toronto in the 1960s for tearing off the porches of these houses, painting the brick white and the detail black, and replacing any lawn with gravel. Today, though, that style has disappeared and the bay-and-gable has become a meme in Toronto, with many new buildings going up in a stripped-down version of it.

It's getting harder to find old photos that fit with the season, so I thought I'd add some photos of supposedly unique Toronto building styles. One of the reasons I say these styles are supposedly unique is that outside Toronto this house would be considered a variety of Queen Anne Revival, the variation being the Romanesque ground floor. In Toronto, though, they're called Annex houses because the style started in a neighbourhood called the Annex. And this is the first one. It was built in 1887 and designed by E. J. Lennox, the leading Toronto architect of the day. He is best known for Old City Hall and Casa Loma.

London, Ontario has many attractive old buidlings of white brick with carved gable trim and bargeboards. The carved tree trunk is a memorial to C. S. Hyman, for whom the street was named; the carver was Neil Cox.

For more information about Hyman, you can click the PiP at top left, which will take you to a description of his many accomplishments.

London, by the way, has an official tour of carved tree trunks, but I think you're meant to just drive around to the trees yourself. Save some time and just drive along Hamilton Road in southeast London, where almost all the tree trunks are. But, of course, we can't admit that it's a southeast London project, can we? When I tell people the neighbourhood in southeast London I grew up in they jump back as if I'm going to rob them. But its reputation is a highly exaggerated version of the truth. Anyway, if you drive along Hamilton Road you can also visit the Buddhist centre in the other PiP.

If you visit Southern Ontario you will see many Ontario Gothic houses like this one. Most are single-storey cottages with a window each side of the central door and a gable above. This is a grander version, and there are grander ones yet. I have read that the gable was in part intended to keep snow from falling on the doorstep; in these days of insulation it also serves to increase the area of the roof and lessen the strain from snow. The style takes its name from a 19th-century style book.

Imposing terracotta ornamentation on these houses in Draycottt Place, Chelsea. The terracotta work has a feel of having been supplied by Doulton. This street was built in the early 1890s.

In the early twentieth century in Toronto a lot of the new houses featured porch roofs supported by wooden columns mounted on taller brick piers. By the 1950s the columns and piers were often out of alignment. Many were replaced by ironwork like that here.

This is a festive group of porches; others are more traditionally staid.

A flint house, built in 1855, in/on Bishopgate, Norwich. This is proudwork, in which the rounded ends of the stones face outward. I believe the gable-ends rising higher than the roof are typical of older East Anglian houses and cottages.

Another flint house is posted to the left and another to the right. All are in/on Bishopgate in Norwich.

The oldest of the three flint houses I uploaded photos of today. This is a half-timber building in the original sense -- that is, it has a stone ground floor with timber construction above. The beams may well have been plastered over for much of its life. Again the raised gable ends are common features of older East Anglian houses and cottages.

All three houses are in/on Bishopgate in Norwich. The other two are posted to the left..
