Mid August 2026, severe drought - heavily impacted by an ongoing dry summer in Europe - and critically low Rhine discharge led to historic low water levels in the IJssel river. These extremely low water levels forced harbor closures, lock restrictions, and temporary pumping interventions along the river.

I took the main photo at the “IJssel Crossing Memorial”, which honours the Canadian soldiers who crossed the IJssel on 11 and 12 April 1945 during Operation Cannonshot.

Memorial to the 97 soldiers - mostly frorm the Royal Norfolk Regiment - that were massacred at Le Paradis, Northern France on 27th May 1940, after surrendering as POWs.

[The officer that ordered the shooting was convicted of this war crime, and was executed in 1949]

Claire, born on 17 October 1977, passed away on 8 March 2022, International Womens’ Day, after a short and brave battle with cancer. She was a passionate environmental activist, community connector and inspiring voice in the zero waste movement. Her vibrant energy, tireless advocacy and deep love for the planet touched countless lives, both locally and online.
An extract from a tribute to Claire from the Plastic Free Seaford organisation.

I have included this memorial in the Trash - Garbage - Rubbish group as one of Claire's many concerns was the amount of plastic rubbish that gets dumped in the sea, or makes its way down there from our rivers.
The 'Oh! Mer...' group celebrates the glories of sea-life, which Claire passionately campaigned to protect and enhance.
The intricate metal working on the tail is very hard to photograph. From a few feet away the surface texture can look dull in less sunny light, but when up close, it shimmers as ones eyes move across its surface.

An der Nordseite des Altstädtischen Marktes steht eine Löwenskulptur, die an den Stadtgründer Schwerins, Heinrich den Löwen, erinnert.
Von seinem viereinhalb Meter hohen Sockel aus schaut der Löwe hämisch grinsend über den Platz, dessen Geschichte bis in die Zeit der Stadtgründung im Jahr 1160 zurückgeht. Als das Denkmal 1995 auf dem Markt eingeweiht wurde, gab es dazu sehr zwiespältige Meinungen, denn eines der vier in Stein gemeißelten Bilder, die sogenannte „Gesäßparade”, zeigt nackte Hintern, die die Bardowicker Bürger einst dem durchreisenden Herzog aus Groll gezeigt haben sollen.

Dieser hatte während seiner Regierungszeit die wichtigen Handelsplätze Schwerin und Lübeck gefördert, während Bardowick immer mehr an Bedeutung verlor. Die Gesäßhuldigung erinnert an die Geringschätzung, die die Bardowicker dem Herzog seither entgegenbringen.Die weiteren Bilder der Säule erzählen satirisch-kritisch vom Wendenkreuzzug 1147, der Gründung Schwerins im Jahr 1160 und der Erschaffung des Braunschweiger Löwen als Symbol der Regentschaft Heinrichs in der Residenz Braunschweig.

Heinrich der Löwe aus dem Geschlecht der Welfen war von 1142 bis 1180 Herzog von Sachsen (als Heinrich III.) sowie von 1156 bis 1180 Herzog von Baiern (als Heinrich XII.).

Although this commemorates a centenary from 1915-16, I don't seem to have photographed this plaque until it was replaced following a refurbishment of the station in early 2026.

Barclay de Tolly was a Baltic-German knight (1761-1818), born in Lithuania, who fought with Russia in the Turkish-Russian War and in the Swedish-Russian War, then becoming General Governor of Finland. During the invasion of Napoleon's army, he was Minister of Land Forces in Russia and field marshall, succeeding in defeating the iinvader.

Designed by A.B. Plummer, it was unveiled on 13 October 1903.

Captain Scott led an ill-fated scientific expedition to the South Pole. He and his companions perished as they neared the end of their return journey from the Pole. His life-time achievements were many too many to record here.
