The whole of China runs on Beijing time which means that it is still dark at 9.00am at Sandaoling in the far west of Xinjiang in December. The morning empties on this day were brought to the opencast mine in two trains. The first one ran long before the sun rose and is here crossing the desert as the first light breaks over the horizon.

A railfan trip on a southern NSW branch line from Wagga to Tumbarumba in April 1972.
Seen here at Wagga station with a diesel assisting from Wagga to Junee due to coal shortage. The coal which was said to have been at Tumbarumba was too weathered to use.

Loco 1037 returning to DownsSteam's yard at the end of its first run on QR track. Oliver is holding the points. This loco was acquired from a restoration group which folded and came to us about 3/4 complete around a year and a half ago. May 2024.

3813 back in Sydney. The marker lights have been set to red for the tender first run to the Eveleigh depot.

Within weeks of this trip the loco was dismantled for maintenance. The then new NSW Railway CEO decided there was no money for it. Most of the components of this previously fine loco have ended up in the possession and 'care' of the greatest shonk in Australian railfandom. I think it will not be rebuilt in my lifetime.

2023 update (50 years on), parts of 3813 are still rusting away thanks to utter selfishness of a hoarder who masquerades as a heritage rail hero. See www.dsrm.org.au

Hazel Grove

The light is fading as 150 137 heads a Buxton train into Hazel Grove station. Since the Blackpool trains were diverted to Manchester Airport there are only a few rush hour electric services using the line from Edgeley Junction to Hazel Grove which is a great waste of the investment that went into installing the catenary and associated infrastructure.

This must be something to do with the very wonderful Northern Powerhouse that our esteemed government keeps banging on about. This is the same government that funded the Ordsall curve in Manchester to allow services between Manchester Victoria and Piccadilly stations. They also removed the funds to increase capacity between Deansgate and Piccadilly with the result that the expensive track has exactly no passenger services using it at all. Joined up thinking at its best.

The roundhouse at Pt Waratah loco depot sometime in late 1972. The loco on the right with writing 'DUBBO' on the sandbox is 5408. Around July I saw it at Lithgow as one of the three shunters. On the same August day as I rode 5917 on the way to TAFE I saw the three Lithgow locos, from the TAFE classroom, going to Enfield. I called there to get a couple of shots on the way home. Then it appeared here.

Early morning on the Nanpiao Coal Railway and the first passenger service of the day is leaving the wayside platform at Shaguotun on its way to Sanjiazi. My little bridge camera was not up to moving subjects in what little light there was so it was 1/4 second at ISO 400 with predictable results. Despite the blur and noise, to me it still recaptures the unrepeatable atmosphere of that icy cold morning.

A Pacer unit was often left in the bay platform at Stockport overnight. I found 142 054 lurking there one night as I returned from Stoke and had to wait a while for a connection onto the Buxton branch. These units will not be mourned by me now they have finally been withdrawn.

JS 5644 stands at the entrance to the yard at the Tianzhuang depot of the Pingdingshan Coal Railway ready to go back to work after servicing. It was well worth creeping quietly into the depot at shift change to capture images of the locos at night.
