Winchcombe bench

HBM - This bench is on the main street in the small Cotswold market town of Winchcombe, dating back to the Anglo-Saxon era. The town still has many buildings and features dating back to medieval times, and more recently, in 2021 it was the site of a meteorite strike of worldwide astronomical interest.

As a bonus, the wall behind the bench has a 'ghost door', that used to lead to the grounds of Winchcombe Abbey.

The sign on the wall reads "Abbey Terrace, known by locals as the High Walk, was created in 1835. The main gate and grounds of Winchcombe Abbey stood northwards from here."

Skiff Decorated for a Fourth of July Regatta, ca. 1914

A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the topic of Fourth of July (flags, fireworks, patriotic, freedom, red-white-blue, barbeques, etc.).

"This is my skiff decorated for the regatta 4th July celebrations" is the description written on the other side of this photo.

This is divided-back real photo postcard with no address, date, stamp box, or postmark on the verso. The message written on the back of the card, however, includes some questions about events leading up to World War I, so it's likely that the photo dates to 1914, the year the war began (see Ultimatum of July 23, 1914, for background information).

--What big convention was to be held in Vienna one week after war started?
--Did not Servia [Serbia] accede to all points except one or two, and wished to arbitrate?

Tewkesbury Abbey interior

Although the Abbey was founded in 1087 by nobleman Robert FitzHamon, building of the present Abbey did not start until 1102. Built to house Benedictine monks, the Norman Abbey was near completion when consecrated in 1121.

Embellishments to the long nave roof and the apsidal chancel were made in the first half of the 14th century in the Decorated style. After the dissolution in 1540 most of the claustral buildings and the Lady Chapel were quarried for their materials but the Abbey Church was sold to the parishioners for £453 (worth around €440,000 today).

Changes made since then to the internal configuration have developed to reflect contemporary styles of devotion, currently of the Anglo-Catholic persuasion.

HFF - this is in the charming mediaeval market town of Tewkesbury.

The town is very attractive in the summer, but in the winter months it is subject to heavy flooding, as it stands on flat land at the confluence of the River Severn and the River Avon.

The town has always flooded, mostly into a 70 hectare 'ham' or flood meadow, but in recent years, climate change and reduced drainage has increased the threat to the town, and the hoses in the picture can find water lapping at - or through - their front doors.

This is a Real Photo Postcard with the AZO print on the back indicating a date from 1924 to 1949. So I guess he is an “imitation hippie”.
I have to say though that I still cringe when I hear the word “hippie”.
Although for convenience I have identified myself in later years as having been one - nobody I knew at the time would ever have used that word to refer to their circle. It was regarded scornfully as out of touch mainstream media or clueless older folks labelling!
We were “the counter-culture” or “freaks” as in Abbie Hoffman “fly your freak flag”. Or sometimes ‘back-to-the- landers” but definitely, definitely not “hippies!”

HBM - a photo from the overcast day out at the Purton Hulks ship graveyard on the river Severn (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purton_Hulks).

Paul Barnett, a local historian, has documented a lot of research about the hulks, and has campaigned to provide them some form of protection from complete destruction. As a result, the vessel in the background - the Kennet barge Harriet" has been scheduled as an ancient monument, and included in the UK National Register of Historic Vessels". This is why it has a fence around it.

On the only gloomy day in April, we visited the largest ship graveyard in mainland Britain. Over several years in the last century, around 86 vessels were deliberately grounded to reinforce the bank of the river Severn at Purton.

Most of the wooden boats have decayed away through natural weathering, though many were partly dismantled shortly after grounding by local people for use as construction materials and firewood. The best preserved are the vessels made of ferroconcrete.

This young woman charmingly displays the crimped short hair, the drop waist dress with narrow pleats and the strapped patent-leather shoes typical of the 1920s.
The marking on the back indicates a date from 1918 - 1930.
Hopefully my German-speaking friends will be able to read and translate the handwriting on the back of this Real Photo Post Card.

From an album given to me by a library patron while I worked as a Library Director.
I don’t know what type of uniform the men are wearing (army?) but it appears that this is a barracks or camp.
The album is World War 1 era and a little later.

A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of schoolhouses and/or schoolchildren.

Caption: "Deturk's School House."

Handwritten note on the other side (no address, stamp, or postmark): "Stanley E. Romich [1905-1985]. Spend his first School days at this school. Age 8. Dec. 31, 1913."

This one-room schoolhouse is still standing along Limekiln Road near Douglassville, Berks County, Pennsylvania. The building is now a private residence with a room added to the front. The stucco covering has been removed, and the underlying stone construction is now visible.

This is a divided-back real photo postcard with a Cyko stamp box ("Cyko - Place Postage Stamp Here") printed on the back. This stamp box design was in use between 1907 and the 1920s.

Some people believe that this type of “mask” surrounding the subject was only used for remembering the person after death. A card for mourners.
Other people disagree and believe they were just added as a decoration.
The print at the bottom names the studio, “Gilmore” with an address of 194 Front St. Worcester, Mass. Cabinet card.
