Outside the summit visitor's centre is a small garden area - intended to showcase the major elements of the natural ecology of the Great Orme. The headland is mainly limestones, with some outcrops having developed into the specialist landscape formation known as Karst, which supports some rare plants and animals - including two species of butterfly unique to here.
The garden is walled - perhaps trying to keep the sheep & goats off the wild flowers growing within - but also for some extra shelter, for seating ...
This bench was probably the largest !

Seat is made from a large slice of tree, and had a family group using it the first time I looked.

Small England class locomotives Palmerston and Prince amidst the majestic scenery of the Welsh Highland Railway on the long straight after Rhyd Ddu station. These locomotives were built by George England and Co in 1864 and 1863 respectively in the first batch of four steam locomotives to operate on the Festiniog Railway.

Corris Railway No.7 arrives at Maespoeth with a train of mixed stock. This little line is steadily reclaiming a good part of the route that was lost when British Railways closed the line in 1948.

Winding drum house at the top of the No.43 incline of the Penmaenmawr granite quarries, Bottom Bank, East Quarry. The drum is c6ft in diameter and held a one inch diameter rope. The incline, which was opened in 1899-1905, was closed in 1961.

Looking along the remains of the top mill at Rhiwbach slate quarry. In the background are the boiler and enginehouse and the course of the incline that lifted the finished slates up to the Rhiwbach tramway which carried them down to the Ffestiniog railway for onward transport to Porthmadog.

The wooden Penmaenpool bridge spans the Afon Mawddach, one of the most scenic estuaries in Wales, not far from Dolgellau. Built in 1879 and replaced a ferry - it was Grade II listed in 1990 [Toll for a car in March 2025 was £1]

Boiler and enginehouse at Rhiwbach slate quarry with the remains of the top mill behind. This view is looking down the incline which brought the finished slates up to the Rhiwbach tramway which carried them down to the Ffestiniog railway which took them on to Porthmadog.

Paddle Steamer Waverley approaches the pier head at Llandudno.

PS Waverley is the last seagoing passenger-carrying paddle steamer in the world. Built in 1946 and entering service in 1947, she sailed from Craigendoran on the Firth of Clyde to Arrochar on Loch Long until 1973.

Entering preservation in 1973 the ship now visits many ports and harbours along the south and west coasts of Britain each summer. 2024 saw a three day visit to North Wales and the Mersey with calls at Holyhead, Llandudno and Wallasey.
