Kronospan has been operating at Chirk since the 1970’s. The works originally made particleboard and melamine and now also produces MDF, T&G flooring for the building trade, laminate flooring and worktops. It is the longest established manufacturer of wood-based panels, and the only laminate flooring producer in the UK.

New timber is sourced in the UK and delivered by train and there is also use of reclaimed wood material

This disused intermittent limekiln is typical of those found across north-east Wales. It has two draughting arches and is in poor condition. A most enjoyable day can be had walking in beautiful countryside and discovering these relics.

The Bull Inn at Llangollen was refaced with terracotta in 1908. The LLB above the bull's head is thought to represent the Llangollen Brewery. The building is listed Grade II.

The Bull Inn at Llangollen was refaced with terracotta in 1908. The LLB above the bull's head is thought to represent the Llangollen Brewery. The building is listed Grade II

William Morgan recorded at the Llangollen Brewery in 1835. By 1870 owned by J S Tanqueray, who was a partner in Combe & Co. Ltd, London, until 1869 when he opened a brewery off New Oxford Street, then moved to Llangollen. The brewery was sold in 1919 and converted into a milk and cheese factory. A later attempt to re-establish the brewery was not realised. The pubs were acquired by F. W. Soames & Co. Ltd of Wrexham.

Burton Buildings in Wrexham was built in 1896 and is adorned with lovely terracotta work which was probably supplied by J C Edwards of Ruabon. Considering the proximity of an extensive terracottta industry in the vicinity it is surprising how little of the local product is to be seen in Wrexham.

The Terracottapolis exhibition in Wrexham featured a range of items and images related to the architectural clayware industry of the area. Sadly the caption did not explain where the background image was taken; it shows the finishing of a piece to top a gate pillar.

This mosaic was rescued from the entrance to the offices of Dennis Ruabon Tiles Ltd., and later Dennis Ruabon Limited, on High St, Ruabon. Seen at the Terracottapolis exhibition in Wrexham.

Burton Buildings in Wrexham was built in 1896. It has rather fallen on hard times but still maintains the original shop fronts and some lovely terracotta work which was probably supplied by J C Edwards of Ruabon. Considering the proximity of an extensive terracottta industry in the vicinity it is surprising how little of the local product is to be seen in Wrexham. The bins are a bonus item.

The Craig y Ddywart kilns served Rhewl Quarry with the original two being constructed after 1874 and a third added between 1898 and 1910. Today they provide useful storage for a business dealing in bagged aggregates, macadams and slurry seals.
