Taken near the rail yards at Belen, New Mexico. The Burlington Northern Santa Fe use this, primarily to fuel trains. The fences are there to keep us out of these busy yards.

I took this photo near the Harvey House museum, which is just alongside the track.

Some of the trains that stop here are 3 miles long.

The public (us) is kept away from the active tracks by these fences. I took the photos from the Harvey House museum parking lot.

Some of the trains that stop here are 3 miles long.

Taken at the Bailey Yard, the largest railway freight-handling yard in the world. Located in North Platte, Nebraska.

Taken from the viewing tower ($$). You need to be high up, so you can get a feel for the huge place. Amazing views.

Taken from their viewing tower ($$), in hopes that you can try to get a feel for the huge place.

Many tracks in the foreground, but there are many more beyond them in the distance.

UP 4005 "Big Boy" in Forney Museum, Denver, Colorado

This Big Boy is displayed under cover at the museum, so is in excellent condition. The only problem we had was getting the entire locomotive in the camera frame.

(This is the only Big Boy to suffer an accident, and it was, sadly, fatal to the engineer and fireman.)

Steam on the Chinese main lines was still commonplace way back in autumn 1983 & I spent 3 weeks on a Railway Transport & Photography tour savouring it.

These China Railways QJ 2-10-2 locomotives add their contributions to the general early morning fug hanging over Harbin engine shed as they are prepared for the road.

Union Pacific Big Boy #4023 (H.A.N.W.E.)

Well, we finally saw all of the Big Boy's that are displayed in static. (Of course, we have shared photos of the operating locomotive 4014).

This unit is located on a hill in Omaha, Nebraska, overlooking the river and interstate. Quite a climb to get up to the viewing area.

The day we visited is was raining on and off, but there was just a sliver of blue sky to be seen.

A rainy early morning visit to Bewdley station on the Severn Valley Railway finds Stanier 5MT 2-6-0 13268 being prepared to work trains later in the day.

This former Great Western Railway station is home to many historical artefacts including this GWR platform bench.

Den schönsten Moment erlebte ich aber, als sich in dieser Szene der Dampfzug vom Bahnhof Streitberg Richtung Ebermannstadt aufmachte. Ein Bild für die Galerie! Ich bekomm jetzt noch Gänsehaut, wenn ich an diesen Augenblick denke. Und mit diesen Bildern ging ein wunderschöner Tag bei der Dampfbahn Fränkische Schweiz zu Ende.

Ein großes Dankeschön an die etwa 50 Vereinsmitglieder, die ehrenamtlich für die Dampfbahn aktiv sind.

An diesem Tag war allerdings noch ein zweiter Sonderzug auf einer Rundfahrt von Chemnitz über Aue, Schwarzenberg, Raschau, Annaberg und Flöha zurück nach Chemnitz unterwegs. Diesen wollten wir auf dem Markersbacher Viadukt fotografieren. Die BR 58 (Preußische G12), also eine Güterzugmaschine die den Ulmer Eisenbahnfreunden gehört, ist für den Zugreiseanbieter "Gleisglück" unterwegs und hatte den Zug am Haken. Nach dem 2. Weltkrieg war diese Maschine auch in der DDR beheimatet und bis 1977 im Chemnitzer Raum im Einsatz. Besonders günstig von diesem Fotopunkt ist, daß die Strecke über den Viadukt Richtung Annaberg steigt, also auch etwas "Musik" zu erwarten ist. Bevor der Zug aber den Viadukt nach einer großen Schleife erreicht, ist er aber auch schon bei der Durchfahrt im Bahnhof Markersbach zu erleben. (PIP) Die berühmt berüchtigte Fotowolke hat sich zum Glück nicht im entscheidenden Moment vor die Sonne geschoben.

Und dann folgte das, worauf sich wahrscheinlich alle Eisenbahnfans am Meisten gefreut haben, nämlich eine spektakuläre Ausfahrt aus dem Bahnhof Aue. Mit lauten Pfiffen, viel Dampf und Getöse verabschiedete sich der Sonderzug, gezogen von den beiden 86ern Richtung Schwarzenberg. Die Diesellok V100 der ehemaligen Deutschen Reichsbahn der DDR am Zugschluß half mit, den Zug über den Erzgebirgskamm zu befördern.

Der Chemnitzer Zugteil trifft ein.

Kurz nach dem Eintreffen der Zwickauer traf auch der Chemnitzer Zugteil ein. Belustigt auch, wie sich die zahlreichen Fotografen und Filmer hier an diesem Zaun postiert hatten. Solche Ereignisse erfreuen sich doch immer wieder großer Beliebtheit. Auch die Sonderzüge waren bis auf den letzten Platz belegt.

Immaculate DR Kriegslok 2-10-0 52 8141-5 streams past the shed light engine during the Dresden Steam Festival.

Or is it a Märklin model???

Built in 1943 for Deutsche Reichsbahn 8141 was rebuilt by DR in 1965 & equipped with a combustion chamber boiler and mixing preheater (type IfS/DR).

Bulleid Pacific West Country 34027 Taw Valley crosses over from shed road 2 to road 1 prior to backing down to take water. Its stock waits in Platform 1 behind in Loughborough Central station.

With frost on the ground the cold morning air is filled with the engine's exhaust giving the scene a steamy atmosphere.

The huge mountain of scrap at Cashmore's scrap yard on East Dock Road in Newport dwarfs British Railways 3MT 2-6-2 tank 82031 waiting its turn to die. Bundles of boiler tubes are neatly stacked but the cylinders & steam chests from unknown engines litter the pile behind. This was my only visit to Cashmores and all the steam had gone by year's end.

A twist in the tale is that, although all of this class of locomotive were scrapped, today a group of enthusiasts are actually building a replica of a Class 3MT tank from scratch. 82045 is progressing well - see www.82045.org.uk/news/82045_news-feb26.html

Speeding through Lancaster Castle on the Down Fast Line LNER A2 pacific 63532 Blue Peter heads 1Z32 the 07.00 London Euston to Carlisle mainline special The Cumbrian Mountaineer. Steam took over the train from Crewe and was running 1 minute early.

Super Power!

Bulleid Battle of Britain pacific 34072 257 Squadron & British Railways Standard 5 4-6-0 73156 double-heading the 13.45 ex-Loughborough non-stop express to Leicester North.

Me and Andy were the crew on 73156 with this same working on Friday. We both agreed that it would make a great photo from across the field so the next day that's just where I went...

It's not obvious but if you look very carefully there is a fence just about visible!

Wreathed in steam British Railways Standard 2 2-6-0 78018 waits in the platform at Leicester North while running round its train; the 19.30 diner.

For once I wasn't on the footplate, I was just a regular punter enjoying dinner on the train with my wife & took advantage of the stop to grab a shot of the engine.
