Gas terminal

This plant at Point of Ayr had a capacity to treat 8.5 million cubic metres (300 million cubic feet) per day at standard conditions of sour gas from offshore. The gas was brought ashore via a 51 centimetres (20 inches) diameter, 33 km long pipeline. The plant separates methanol (used for hydrate inhibition), water and condensate from the gas stream. The gas was sweetened with an amine solvent to remove sulphur compounds down to 3.3 ppm hydrogen sulphide and 35 ppm mercaptans. The hydrocarbon dew-point of the gas is reduced by mechanical refrigeration to a quality suitable for pipeline transportation. The treated gas was piped to Connah's Quay Power Station at 30 bar via a 27 km pipeline. Any gas surplus to the fuel requirements of the power station was further treated and delivered to the Burton Point terminal of the National Transmission System.

The site is owned by eni Liverpool Bay Operating Company Ltd, a subsidiary of eni UK Ltd. It was built near the site of a former colliery, which closed in August 1996. Approval for the site was given in February 1993, to be constructed by Hamilton Oil (of Denver, USA). BHP bought Hamilton Oil in 1991. The amount of gas to be brought onshore would be enough to provide electricity for half of Wales. Construction took place in 1994. eni bought BHP Billiton's interest in the Liverpool Bay Development in April 2014.

In 2026 the gas field is exhausted and the terminal is under demolition. The site is intended to be re-used as a terminal for carbon dioxide, piped from a number of sources (cement works in particular), which is to be injected into the strata of the Morecambe Bay gas field.

The southernmost of the two berths at the Tranmere oil terminal on the Mersey. The tug Svitzer Amazonas is seen tied up here covering the contract to have at least one tug available on the river at all times.

Chlorine world

Compressed chlorine storage at the INOVYN ChlorVinyls Limited Rocksavage chemical works. This plant mainly produces chlorine, caustic soda and chlorinated derivatives. I believe that these spheres are no longer used.

The signal was once used to control vessels using Weston Marsh Lock which links the Weaver Naviagation to the Manchester Ship Canal. The Weston Canal running across the image linked the Weaver to the docks at Weston Point and also the now derelict Runcorn and Weston Canal.

Tanks at the North Alfred Dock facility operated by um Terminals at Birkenhead. The facility offers a shipping berth with dedicated product lines and pipeline clearance facilities and currently handles processing oils, base oils, industrial oils and chemicals.

The company says that Evonik products make tires fuel-efficient, mattresses more elastic, medications more effective, and animal feeds healthier. Its website lists a large range of products including petrochemical antifoulant, gasoline octane enhancer and corrosion inhibitors.

This plastics manufacturing plant at Siddick was opened by Eastman Kodak in the early 1980s and was later acquired by Indorama Ventures PCL. It produced around 160,000 tonnes pa of PET granules. mainly used in the forming of plastic bottles. As Asian competition increased the plant became uneconomic and production was first halved and then stopped completely in early 2014. The site was mothballed in hope of better times until Indorama decided in 2017 that it would not reopen. Demolition was completed during 2018.

Pipe bridge over the Trent & Mersey Canal opposite the Brunner Mond/Tata Chemicals works at Lostock Gralam. At the time the works was producing soda ash, sodium bicarbonate, calcium chloride and associated alkaline chemicals. The pipelines are controlled by INEOS Inovyn who operate the nearby Holford brinefield.

Verdi is a 1999 built oil & chemical tanker with a DWT of 3,045 tonnes. Seen here outbound on the Humber it was at that time registered in Antigua & Barbuda.The current registration is Cyprus.

Warrington chemicals

The silos are part of Ineos Silicas' plant adjacent to the Mersey at Warrington. This company subsequently merged with PQ Corporation and continued to produce inorganic chemicals at this former Crosfield's site. The blue-faced buildings are part of the Unilever washing powder plant which has now closed.

Synthite Ltd founded in West Bromwich in 1920 to produce resins but soon became a successful manufacturer of formaldehyde. In 1928 the business was incorporated into the Charles Tennant Group, a diverse international network of manufacturing and distribution companies. 1950 saw formaldehyde production begun at the newly acquired plant at the Alyn Works in Mold, North Wales and in 1991 all production moved to North Wales. Since 2014 it has acquired amino resin manufacturing facilities in Mold and Cork from Dynea and renamed that business TS Resin and Marinochem.

The Ineos operated Grangemouth refinery was the largest industrial plant by volume in Scotland and supplied much of the oil based fuels used in Scotland and the North of England. Crude oil refining ended in April 2025 and the site is now transitioning to an import facilty for fuels.

Rock Ferry Pier

The pier at Rock Ferry was used for discharging oil tankers but has been disused for many years. The crane on the end collapsed in 2019 and subsequently an inner section has been demolished to prevent access to the structure. This was not without problems as residual oil in the pipes found its way into the Mersey.

This 141m/460ft tall chimney was built in the early 1970s at the works of Reckitt and Colman who made a range of products including dolly blue and zebrite grate polish. Today the business specialises in healthcare products as Reckitt Benckiser Health Care UK Ltd and has moved its Hull business to a site a short distance away.

A last look for me at the shaft limekilns on the Tata Chemicals Lostock Works at the edge of Northwich. With the ending of soda ash production these kilns will be shut down and demolished.
