The butterfly has a wingspan of approximately 40 to 48 mm. The undersides of the wings feature an inconspicuous brown to grey-brown mottled pattern. A characteristic feature is the black eyespot with a white center near the tip of the forewing, often ringed with orange. The uppersides differ by sex: females display large orange patches, whereas males are almost entirely dark brown. It is found in nutrient-poor and damp grasslands, along roadsides and forest edges, in meadows, and in wildlife-friendly gardens. The butterflies fly in a single generation per year from June to September. Diet: The adult butterflies feed on nectar from various flowers such as knapweeds, thistles, blackberries, and umbellifers.
Pip1–3: Close-ups of the butterfly

The main image really shows just how tiny it is! The beetle is quite small (approx. 3 to 4.5 mm) and features a distinctive, irregular yellow-and-black pattern on its pronotum and wing cases that resembles ancient characters or hieroglyphs. It is frequently found along sunny forest edges, in thickets and hedgerows, and in meadows. It prefers moist, sunny habitats, often near bodies of water or river floodplains. Both the beetles and their larvae are herbivores, feeding primarily on the leaves of various willow species and sometimes on poplars or birches. As is typical for case-bearing leaf beetles, they often simply drop from the leaf when threatened to escape predators :))
Pip1–5: Close-ups of the beetle

The spider is generally inconspicuous in color—yellowish, brown, or gray—with a slender build and often darker chelicerae (fangs). They do not build typical webs for catching prey; instead, they weave tube- or sack-like resting retreats out of silk beneath leaves, bark, or stones. They are nocturnal, free-roaming hunters that locate their prey (insects and small arthropods) using their sense of touch and overpower them directly, without a web. They are frequently found on bushes, in meadows, forests, or gardens—often on the leaves of plants—and are completely harmless to humans :))
Pip1–4: Close-ups of the spider

The common thick-headed fly (*Sicus ferrugineus*) belongs to the family Conopidae. It reaches a body length of 8 to 13 mm. Characteristic features include its reddish-brown body, pale yellow face, noticeably thickened frons, and the swollen abdomen that gives the fly its name. The adult flies are diurnal and feed primarily on nectar and pollen; they are frequently found on plants in the daisy (Asteraceae) and carrot (Apiaceae) families. As endoparasitoids, the females catch bumblebees in flight and use their ovipositor to deposit an egg between the bee's abdominal segments. The larva develops inside the bumblebee and overwinters there within the pupa, while the host dies :))
Pip1–5: Close-ups of the flies

Winged carpenter ants are not a distinct species of ant; rather, they are the reproductive individuals (virgin queens and males) of the carpenter ant (*Camponotus*), which is one of the largest ant species in Central Europe. Winged queens often reach a length of 16 to 20 mm. They possess two pairs of translucent wings—used exclusively for the nuptial flight—and range in color from deep black to reddish-brown. Typically, from late spring to early summer, hundreds of winged ants leave the nest simultaneously during warm, humid weather to mate in mid-air. The males die shortly after successful mating. The fertilized virgin queen actively sheds her wings (breaking them off at a pre-determined breaking point) and searches the ground for a suitable hiding place.
Pip1–4: Close-up shots of the ant
