The Exeter Ship Canal was opened in 1566, built to bypass weirs that had been erected on the River Exe and thus enable goods to reach the port of Exeter - originally in barges, later in ocean-going ships. Following successive enlargements and extensions it reached its present form in the 1830s, when the canal basin was also built.

In 1827 the canal was extended two miles south to the present entrance at Turf Lock, giving access to craft of 400 tons. This caused concerns by traders at Topsham who feared being bypassed by the extension. An Act of Parliament allowed a side lock to be constructed into the estuary opposite Topsham. The lock is no longer in use but the lock cottage remains at this isolated location and is now used as a community facility by the Friends of the Exeter Canal.

The Rolle or Torrington Canal in north Devon extends from its mouth into the River Torridge at Landcross 6 miles southwards to the industrial mills and corn-mills at Town Mills, Rosemoor, Great Torrington, and beyond to Healand Docks and weir on the Torridge, where survive the ruins of Lord Rolle's limekilns. This tub-boat canal was completed in 1827 and was closed in 1871 when it was sold to the London and South Western Railway to form the trackway of the proposed new railway from Bideford to Torrington.

Some parts of the canal are still visible today, including this, the Beam Aqueduct, over the River Torridge/ It is now used to carry the entrance drive to Beam Mansion, now an adventure holiday centre.

Smeaton's Tower

This is the major part of the third Eddystone lighthouse erected by civil engineer John Smeaton. It operated from 1759 to 1877 and was subsequently removed to Plymouth and rebuilt on the Hoe as a monument to Smeaton.

Granite Tramway

Turnout at a passing place on the upper reaches of the Haytor Granite Tramway.

The Haytor Granite Tramway was opened in September 1820 by George Templer to carry stone from his quarries around Hay Tor down to the Stover Canal for onward shipping. It is remarkable for the rails being made of the same material as its intended traffic. It operated until the late 1850s when competition from rail served quarries caused a significant decline in demand.

The large L shaped pieces of granite used for rails remain in situ and on the upper section owned by the Dartmoor National Park the line is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

This disused limekiln at Dornafield Cross in Devon has the rare survival of a low shed in front to protect the lime from rain after it has been drawn from the kiln.

This former shoe shop in Tavistock is now Specsavers. Samuel Lennard began shoe manufacture on his own account in Leicester in 1876. Working with his brothers to retail shoes they traded for many years as varous incarnations of the Public Benefit Boot Company. The business was acquired by Great Universal Stores in 1973 and eventually disappeared into the now defunct Easiphit shoe shop business.

Shillamill Viaduct

Shillamill viaduct was built in 1889 by the Plymouth, Devonport and South Western Junction Railway, engineers Galbraith and Church, with J.W. Szlumper for the London and South Western Railway. It is constructed of squared rock-faced granite with ashlar quoins, dressings and arch-rings. It is a double-track viaduct with twelve 50ft arches built almost in a straight line and is about 700 ft long with its greatest height at about 100ft. Although the line was closed south of Lydford in 1968 there are regular proposals for reinstatement to provide a second railway link to Cornwall. It is listed Grade II.
