I hope everyone had a HAPPY, HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!! I love this holiday best of all! And why not?! My mother loved to make costumes for me and my brothers every year, and we had the freedom to go trick-or-treating in our safe and wonderful neighborhood by ourselves when we got old enough! Pumpkin patches were something to look forward to every year and we would make the 45 minute drive down to Half-Moon Bay to the vast pumpkin patches there where each of us picked our own pumpkin. Before my mom and dad released their four little monsters into the biggest pumpkin patch we could find, they would give us exactly ONE rule: "You may have ANY pumpkin you want, but you must carry it to the car by yourself." :D My perfect pumpkin started out nearly as big as myself, but by the time I got to the car, that pumpkin had magically transformed into something I could actually get my arms around! :D Dad had wonderful pumpkin face templates for us to choose for the eyes, nose, and mouth, and he would carve them for us while we watched in delight and anticipation! When the pumpkins were opened up, we'd dig out the "guts" and mom would make toasted pumpkin seeds, and later, when the pumpkins were starting to fade, she'd turn them into pumpkin pies and bread! YUMMY!! For weeks before the great night, there were Halloween decorations and excitement in the air, parades and contests and special books to read, and let's not forget the tv special, "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!" ... Halloween night, we would race from house to house getting so much candy we'd have to go home and dump it out before rushing out for MORE! We always got the most candy of anyone in our schools, and I would hoard my candy like a dragon hoards her pile of gold! :D Oh my, I have the very finest memories of this fantastic, wonderful holiday!!!

Most of my pictures for Bokeh Thursday involve the tree you see under this destroyed acorn. When Steve and I moved here, we discovered an old, ruined tree house platform in a very dead Oak tree. We will never know if the building of that platform killed the tree but it seems unlikely. However, the tree had been simply massive (for trees in this area) with a base of about 4-5 feet and I was so sad that it had been dead for many years. There were nails pounded into the bark all over, and a crude, broken wooden ladder wound its way up one side. It looked unsafe and we never considered trying to climb up the old skeleton. However, I didn't realize HOW unsafe it truly was until I took the dogs on a walk last early spring and stopped dead in my tracks when I found that the entire tree had fallen over in a heavy storm!

So, today's Bokeh Thursday pictures are about the destruction I found on this poor dead tree.

First I spotted destroyed acorns on top of the trunk and found a piece that was interesting and you can see lots of pieces in bokeh behind! :)

6 more pictures in notes above! :)

Well, what do you know, today is ACTUALLY Thursday! :D (I spent most of yesterday thinking it was Thursday! :D) Since I already took a bunch of pictures for Bokeh Thursday yesterday, I looked to see what other interesting pills we had to photograph for my Picture of the Day. Both types of pills I chose were dog pills! The picture above shows a kind of yummy, chewable pain pill that we gave to one of our dogs, Molly, after she had surgery to remove a foxtail from her stomach! (Apparently she laid on the foxtail, which worked its way through her thick fur and into her stomach. Aren't foxtails cool? NOT!!) The other picture I took today were blue and white capsules, which are an antibiotic--see the picture above in a note! (Texture by Jerry Jones)

Orison Swett Marden (1850 - 1924) was an American spiritual author in the New Thought Movement. He also held a degree in medicine, and was a successful hotel owner. He died in 1924 at the age of 74. Wikipedia: Orison Swett Marden

Thus, these got shoved into second position today. Yes, I could have recreated the picture but I was happy to take a different picture today.

I will say that the moment I read that the theme for Bokeh Thursday was "Medicine", I instantly thought of these chewable, calcium-rich tablets. We have a large container of them and I have often admired their pretty colors and wonderful, fruity smell. Definitely something to keep away from children... something so similar to "Sweet Tarts" would be wolfed down by the handful by innocent and clever little monkeys. I just looked them up and just in case you live near a Costco, these reviews are great! Viewpoint: Kirkland Signature Antacid Fruit-Flavored Tablets

It's never a good idea to go out with your camera when you feel rushed and cranky and not in the mood to take pictures! So, I spent about 20 minutes outside taking pictures of different wheels, and I went in the garage and found some more...and of course when I looked at all the pictures, not even one was worth wasting time on. So I went downstairs and before I went out to try again, I put some dishes in the dishwasher...and stopped. HEY! WHEELS! So I grabbed the camera and my macro flash, and PRESTO, I got my picture! :)

By the way, the white stuff you see on the wheels is built-up calcium from our high-mineral content well water. I never noticed it before! Now that I know how awesome vinegar is at removing calcium build-up, all I need to do is put a couple of cups in and run an empty load, and all that white will dissolve like magic! :D
