Although the exact date of the church's construction is unknown, it is generally agreed that the decorations were completed in 1494.

From the outside, the church appears very simple and resembles a barn. The wooden roof rests on a wall surrounding the church, creating a four sided portico, a covered kind of cloister around the church itself. An insciption above the south door tells, that the church was erected through a donation of a priest named Peter and his wife Pepani.

Another inscription mentions Phillip Goul as the painter of the church. A master whose work reflects the continued vitality of Orthodox artistic traditions under Venetian rule.
The church is completey inide the walls and the roof built around.

Since 1985 Timios Stavros tou Agiasmati is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Painted Churches in the Troodos Region".

The chapel is dedicated to Saint Timotheus as well as Saint Mavri, whose sacred bones are held in the chapel.

Church authorities claim, that Saint Timotheus was married to Saint Mavri. Fighting against idiolatry they were arrested and martyred.

Local tradition tells a different story, saying that Saint Mavri was born in a nearby village. When her parents arranged for her to marry, she refused saying she wanted to devote herself to God. The day before the wedding she jumped into the hot oven, where the wedding food was prepared, and while God saved her life, she was left with a blackened face. Then she left the villae and lived the remaining life in seclusion of the hills.

East of the chapel temple runs the holy water of Agia Mavri, which is considered miraculous. Believers make pilgrimages to this chapel in summer.

One of these was the present church, built on a rocky outcrop that dominated the surrounding landscape.
The current Panagia Theoskepasti was built in 1923 on the foundations of the older Byzantine church. It is a cross-domed church with three apses, a central dome, and a narthex. It combines Byzantine and Neo-Gothic architectural elements.
