It was sunny and warm but very windy when I found this Scarce Swallowtail (Iphiclides podalirius) on a butterfly bush. Firmly clinging on, it defied the gusts of wind. In recent years I’ve been encountering this butterfly species again and again, whereas years ago it was still an absolute rarity. Apparently, Scarce Swallowtails are beneficiaries of climate change.

Whilst out walking, I spotted this small, colourful hawk-moth, which was darting at high speed between the flowers of a butterfly bush (Buddleja) to feed on nectar. It was the Broad‑bordered Bee hawk-moth (Hemaris fuciformis), a species of hawk-moth that is quite rare here in Franconia and is active during the day. This was my first record of the species. More details can be seen in the PiP.

I found this Scarce Swallowtail (Iphiclides podalirius) in an alfalfa meadow near my hometown. On closer inspection you can see that the right “tail” and part of the right hindwing are missing, clearly pecked off. So the butterfly survived a bird attack. Scarce Swallowtails are considered the most beautiful Europea butterflies. In recent years they were classified as highly endangered. In the meantime, however, stable populations have formed in some regions, for example in Franconia. A pleasing development.
Found in my garden: a magnificent female Common Blue (Polyommatus icarus), a butterfly species that is widespread here, flying from April to October and producing up to three generations per year. This little blue butterfly, namely the black hairstreak (Satyrium pruni), recently turned up in my garden to feast on the flowers of the Sweet Mock Orange (Philadelphus coronarius). After hatching in late winter, the caterpillars of the black hairstreak first feed on flower buds, then on the flowers, and later on the leaves of blackthorn bushes (and also plum trees). The butterfly flies very quickly and is very inconspicuous due to its colouring. It is considered to be endangered.

It is quite rare and is on the early warning list of the German Red List.

The photo was taken at the edge of a riparian forest. The Lesser Purple Emperor (Apatura ilia) is listed on the early warning list of Germany’s Red List. One special characteristic: The species does not feed on flower nectar. Males: To obtain minerals, they feed on carrion, dung, tree sap, moist soil patches, and puddles on forest paths. Females: They feed on honeydew from aphids and on overripe fruit.

At the moment, with a bit of luck, you might spot the little green skippers, also known as blackberry skippers. Their official scientific name is Callophrys rubi. They are rarely seen because their upper side is brown and their underside is emerald green. They are difficult to spot in flight, and when they land in the gras, they fold their wings together, revealing their green undersides. Clever! The photograph was taken in a nature reserve in Franconia.

Barely the size of a fingernail is the Short-tailed Blue (Cupido argiades). Just twenty years ago, it was considered very rare and critically endangered. It has only become more common in the last few years, and I have even spotted it occasionally myself. Perhaps it is a ‘winner’ of climate change? The photo shows two specimens feeding on mineral salts from animal droppings. The Short-tailed Blue can be recognised by the tiny ‘tail’ on its hindwing (see note 1) and by the two orange spots on the underside of the hindwings (note 2).
The photo shows a beautiful butterfly from the Pieridae family. It is commonly referred to as the wood white (Lepidea sinapis), but this is not entirely correct. It could also be Lepidea juvernica or Lepidea reali (a ‘species complex’). All three species look completely identical and can only be reliably distinguished by examining their genitalia or through DNA analysis. The butterfly in the photo was found in a sparse woodland within a nature reserve.

At present, in areas where garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata) is particularly abundant, you can see the orange tip (Anthocharis cardamines) flying about. Both sexes look very similar, but the male also has an orange spot at the tip of the forewing. In PiP1, a female. For the first time, I was able to observe them mating: flying around together, perching together (see PiP2) and then mating (see main image): the male is on the left, the female on the right.

The picture shows the large tortoiseshell (Nymphalis polychloros), a butterfly that can now only be spotted occasionally. Its caterpillar feeds on the leaves of various deciduous trees, including fruit trees. As insecticides are used in many orchards, the population of this butterfly species has been severely decimated. The large tortoiseshell butterfly looks very similar to the small tortoiseshell (Aglais urticae), but is not related to it.
