Gentoo penguins are the 3rd largest species of penguin. They breed on the Antarctic peninsula and on Subantarctic islands, using snow free areas to build their nest of stones. Often the nests lie quite high up and the birds have to struggle uphill. Downwards they like to toboggan on their bellies;-)

These photos are from Peterman Island where all 3 species of pygoscelis can be watched (apart from gentoo also Adelie/ Pygoscelis adeliae and chinstrap/Pygoscelis antarcticus). Visitors should keep their distance and never block the birds' way to the sea.

SC189- Animals in the wild

Southern elephant seals are the world's largest true seals, the bulls can reach a weight of 3500-4000kg and a length of 6,5m.

At Hannah Point/ Walker Bay on Livingston Island (South Shetland Islands, a group of volcanic islands north of the Antarctic Peninsula) juvenile male elephant seals come to rest and moult.

Because of the high concentration of diverse wildlife, the rare vegetation and the geologigal features (fossils and a red jasper dyke) visits are very restricted.
I felt privileged to see the huge elephant seals and was glad to have managed a decent shot.

This week I only found a pair of (wild) storks, they had chosen to build their nest not in the wild but in our zoo. With the river nearby and a protected environment for their nest they have the best of both worlds;-)

Taken at Mawson Antarctica 58 years ago today, on 13 Feb 1966, an unforgettable day. During the previous night a blizzard brought winds gusting over 100 kt (185 km/hr) which broke the mooring cables of our ship, the "Nella Dan". Before the winds could blow it onto the rocks across the harbour, the captain ordered the engines to "half ahead" and drove her onto the rocks. As an ice-strengthened ship, the bows were able to take this and the engines kept her in place. This was taken on b/w film as I came off night shift, I also later took a coloured image when the wind and drifting snow eased. FOOTNOTE. The following day the ship backed off the rock bank undamaged.

Antarctic sea ice, with an ice shelf in the distance. As we finish 2023 there is a record low extent of Antarctic sea ice, following similar lows in Arctic sea ice earlier in the year. This works well viewed large.

I was very glad that, for World Environment Day, the Australian government has tripled the size of the Macquarie Island Marine Park, in the Southern Ocean, bringing it to over 475,000 sq km. This will completely close the area to fishing, mining and other extractive activities, and provide much better protection for the seals, penguins and other birdlife on the island.

These are King Penguins, taken swimming around the ship on which I travelled.
