Stwlan Dam impounds the upper storage reservoir for the Tan-y-Grisiau pumped storage hydro-electricity scheme, also known as the Ffestiniog Power Station, which was commissioned in 1963. This type of station can respond to a sudden peak demand in seconds and the power required to "recharge" the system evens out the base load demand overnight. Full output is 360 MW and operates at 72% efficiency - the missing percentage represents the use of electricity to pump water back up to Llyn Stwlan, at times of otherwise low demand - such as overnight.

Disaggregating layers of slate without cracking.

These shallow draft and flat bottomed boats were used to transport slates across Llyn Padarn (Llanberis Lake). Found on the lake bed and raised in 1979.

The working of slate at the Penrhyn Quarries near Bethesda continues to be undertaken by the company Welsh Slate. The extensive nature of these long-established quarries is evident in this view where the tiny yellow object in the centre of the image is actually a large bulldozer.

When I planned my trip to Blaenau Ffestiniog, I had in mind how I would photograph it and expected to use a lot of black and white. I did not see it on the best of days as dark clouds threatened and occasionally deposited rain. This kind of weather and the visible remnants of the area's slate producing history can create a slightly grim appearance but it is not without its attractions. A great deal of effort has been put into making the centre attractive with some very striking slate monuments greeting the arriving rail passenger and leading away into the town. I shot (rather than converting) in b&w to maximise the striking nature of these monuments. The inscription 'Canol y Dref' is Welsh for 'Town Centre'.

Above the Llyn Padarn railway station, next to the NSM, is the refurbished lower section of the partly restored Vivian incline, a gravity balance system where loaded slate wagons haul empty wagons back up.

Restored "Hudson" tipper / skip waggons of the type used on the Dduallt deviation.
Mountaineer (Alco) is currently out of boiler ticket and also requires de-converting from oil-firing.

One of the many alternative means of transport around the railway systems in the slate mines, quarries and related areas. This example relies on human arm-power, but the gearing looks advantageous. There are a couple of slab waggons behind, which seem to be built to the narrower 2ft gauge, as used on the quarry/mine working levels.
