What exactly constitutes a posed group? Three or more people arranged in a formal fashion as the central object of the picture. Whatever the event - whatever the group. To me there is a kind of magic to this type of picture. Some one has decided that this event - this moment in time - deserves to be preserved. Let's not disappoint them

Handwritten note in black ink on the other side of this photo: "This is Merritt on the end sitting down. He is pretty but he's better looking than Leo was."
Later note in blue ink on the verso: "Babe Closner's husband."
Nine nurses and five soldiers pose for a group photo on a sunny day. I like all the different expressions on their faces, some beaming with wide smiles and others with squinty eyes as they endure the bright sunlight.

I'm not sure where or when the photo was taken. Perhaps the uniforms that the nurses and soldiers are wearing would provide some clues.

This is a real photo postcard with a divided back, and the type of Azo stamp box (with four corner triangles pointing up) printed on the other side suggests a date between 1907 and 1918. The text on the banner in the photo is "Dead Gamers, Orgd. 1898, Lancaster, Pa." The lettering on the drumhead is "Dead-Gamers, Lancaster, Pa." Both the banner and the drumhead include an illustration of a rooster that's saying, "Hur-ray."

The Dead Gamers' Camping Association was a fraternal group based in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. This same photo appeared in "The Lancaster That Was" column in the Lancaster Sunday News, October 22, 1978, p. B-2, with the headline, "When the Dead Gamers Were a Lively Bunch of Robust Lads."

The column said, "The club, replete with its band, is seen in [this] photo as it took its departure from the old Reading Railroad Station, at Prince and James Streets, in Aug. 1909 for an encampment at Bedford, Pa." I'm not sure this information is accurate, however, since Heather Truckenmiller's article, The Dead Gamers Camp in Allenwood, Pa., cites sources that place the Dead Campers in Allenwood, Union County, Pa., rather than Bedford, Pa., in August 1909.

"The Dead Gamers," the column explains, "were typical of a number of camping clubs that flourished in this community in the late 1800s and the early 1900s. The lads, we are told, were banded together as all-male social organizations . . . to eat, drink, and make merry with joyous song. And when the spirit moved them they took off for extended camping trips into the wilds."

A handwritten note on the other side of this photo identifies one of the men as "Eugene E. Gates, Sr.," and tells the viewer to "look for man with beard, dot on shirt, in centre (back) of [the group in the] photo."

For a better view of the group, see a cropped version of the photo. I also created an enlargement of the image that shows where Eugene E. Gates, Sr., is standing.

The main topic has been road runs & visits for "The Jampot Rally" in August 2025 - we're hosting it this year.

This is a divided-back real photo postcard of wedding participants and guests with the bride and groom seated in the center.

Music evidently played an important part in the wedding celebration. A gramophone is displayed prominently at front left, and two musicians -- a man in uniform with a mandolin and another man with a guitar -- are lying on the ground in front of the group.

Other interesting details include a fellow holding up a bottle and a mug (upper left) and a barefooted man with a dog on his lap (lower right).

There's no date or location, and the only clue to the photo's origin is an ink-stamped credit to "Foto - N. Aboltin" on other side.

The man at lower right is holding a string that he pulled to release the shutter on a camera to take this photo. This "string selfie" captured a portrait of himself and thirteen other members of his family, including a man and a woman at the front who are holding a small kid on their laps.

This is a real photo postcard with a divided back and a type of Azo stamp box (with four corner triangles pointing up) on the other side that suggests a possible date that may be as early as 1907 to 1918. There's no address, postmark, or message on the verso.

Banner (upper left): "8th Ward Camping Club."
I haven't been able to determine where the Eighth Ward Camping Club was located or why its members were dressed up in clown costumes and other amusing getups. Considering that there's a fellow behind the group who's delivering a tray full of mugs filled with beer, I'm sure that they're enjoying themselves. See a cropped version of the photo for a closer look at the costumes.

A group of twenty-six people -- ten men, nine women, and seven children -- stood on a narrow bridge over a swiftly flowing stream to pose for this photo. For better views of the group, see cropped versions of the left side and right side of the photo.

The type of Azo stamp box (with four corner triangles pointing up) printed on the other side of this photo postcard suggests a possible date that may be as early as 1904 to 1918. The postcard is unused, and there's no indication where the stream is located.

To pose for a picture, some young men and women have gathered around a table in what may be a soda shop or ice cream parlor. One of the guys is wearing a paper soda jerk cap, and another one has a "Marco" baseball jersey. Three of the women have saddle shoes, and the one standing on the left-hand side is wearing a skirt with a nautical theme (the pattern in the fabric depicts boats and docks).

A number of Coca-Cola bottles are on the table, and the signs arranged around the room feature advertisements for Dolly Madison ice cream, ice cream soda, Coca-Cola, and ice cream cones. The back of the photo is stamped with "Property of Mrs. Napoletano," but there's no other identifying information.

Signs:

"Dolly Madison Bulk Ice Cream. Deliciously Different. New! Convenient Shape. Easy to Dip. Easy To Store."

"Chocolate Ice Cream Soda."

Five girls with dolls stand side by side as they pose for a photo. The girl on the right seems to be smiling and is looking toward the camera, but the other four have glum expressions with downcast eyes (see a cropped version of the photo for a better view of their faces).

Are the four glum girls annoyed at having their picture taken? Is the smiling girl happy with her doll and are the others disappointed with theirs for some reason? It's difficult to tell what's going on.
This is an unused real photo postcard with an Azo stamp box design (four corner triangles pointing up) on the other side, which indicates a date that may be as early as 1904 to 1918.

Alan Mays has posted:

A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of hat in hand.

Five fellows pose for a photo on a sunny day. The right side of the image is a bit washed out due to the bright light, but it's evident that the man on the end is holding a straw hat in his hand. What may not be obvious at first glance, however, is that the man in the middle is balancing a mounted deer head against his leg as he holds on to it with both hands.

There's no address, message, or postmark on the other side of this unused real photo postcard. The type of Azo stamp box (with four corner triangles pointing up) printed on it suggests a date that may be as early as 1904 to 1918.

Although animal head taxidermy mounts seem a little macabre to me, I do have two other similar photos.
