Concorde has gone and is still mourned. The Trident and many other types each with their own fans have come and gone. Now, the long serving B747-400 is being progressively withdrawn by British Airways to be replaced by an extended B777 fleet, by the A380, the B787 and, eventually, the A350. This group is for pictures of British Airways B747-400s only. Pictures can be from any date and the objective of the group is to document all of the airline's aircraft of the type in as many locations as possible from Cardiff to Sydney and including those already in storage.

The dispersal of the fleet and the beginning of scrapping seemed to make all the more important a record in photographs of the very last days of most of the fleet. It was all the more sad then that this was as close I could get to G-CIVZ (with G-CIVF behind) on this wintry visit to Newquay. With dismantling under way, VZ is framed by VC10 ZA148 of the Cornwall Aviation Heritage Centre.
When a situation is bad, you have to make the best of it. When the only photographs you can take are, by the usual criteria, bad, those are what you have to take. Perhaps posterity will look kindly on the thought.

There were four B747-400s in BA Maintenance, officially withdrawn from service, of course. They were G-CIVY, G-CIVK, G-CIVB (in Negus) and G-CIVP.

The BA B747-400 has been a part of my working and travelling lives and I contend to this very hour that the sight of one in the turn on a SID is unsurpassed in aviation. It was and is a beautiful aircraft.
