Kortrijk experienced significant population growth in the 19th-century, necessitating new parish churches. The Passionist Fathers were establishing a monastery, a school, and the Sint-Antoniuskerk (Saint Anthony Church) in 1873. The church - built in the Neo-Romanesque style- is a much visited place of pilgrimage. The Sint-Antoniuskerk is well known for its colourful murals.

Brother Isidore was a professed religious from the Passionists. He had fragile health when he arrived in the area in 1912; after a year as a cook, he was given the less demanding task of porter. He tried to help everyone who came to him during World War I, earning the nickname ‘Brother Good’. Beatified brother Isidore died in 1916; his tomb is located in a side chapel

The Lourdesgrot - next to the Sint Antoniuskerk - was consecrated in 1908, to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the first apparition of Mary in Lourdes. The grotto was built by the Passionist friars on a location with a small chapel. The site soon became an important and busy place for Marian devotion in Kortrijk.

The grotto is known for the many small ex-voto tiles on its walls. These tiles testify to answered prayers and gratitude.

De Bonifaciuskerk van Medemblik is een Nederlandse kerk uit 1404. Een voorganger van de kerk, waarvan de oudste vermelding uit 1118 dateert, was kort voordien in vlammen opgegaan. De kerkruïnes werden gebruikt bij de bouw van de nieuwe kerk. De kerk was oorspronkelijk gewijd aan Sint-Bonifacius, later ook aan Sint-Maarten.

Pylos has been inhabited since Neolithic times. It was a significant kingdom in Mycenaean Greece, with the remains of the so-called "Palace of Nestor" excavated nearby, named after Nestor, the king of Pylos in Homer's Iliad. During the Peloponnesian War, the Bay of Pylos was the site of the Battle of Sphacteria in 425 BC.

In the Middle Ages, during the time of the Crusades, Pylos fell to the Principality of Achaia, founded in 1205. In the 1280s the Franks built the Old Navarino castle. Pylos came under the control of the Republic of Venice from 1417 until 1500, when it was conquered by the Ottoman Empire.

The Ottomans used Pylos and its bay as a naval base, and built the New Navarino / Niokastro fortress there. The area remained under Ottoman control, with the exception of a brief period of renewed Venetian rule from 1685–1715 and a Russian occupation from 1770–71, until the outbreak of the Greek War of Independence in 1821.

The church of the Transfiguration of Christ occupies a central place inside the Niokastro in Pylos. It was originally built as a mosque during the reign of sultan Murad III (1573-1595). During renewed Venetian rule it was turned into a catholic church. After the re-conquest of the castle by the Ottomans it is likely that the building was again used as a mosque. In 1770, during the Orlov revolt, it was turned into a christian orthodox church. The church was used as an ammunition depot by the French troops at Niokastro (1828-1830) and after that, until 1842.

Sint-Elisabeth Begijnhof (Saint Elizabeth Beguinage) was founded in 1238 by Countess Joanna of Constantinople. The site largely retains its medieval structure with 41 pocket-sized, whitewashed, 17th century houses around a central green courtyard. The gothic St. Matthew’s Chapel dates back to 1464 and was rebuilt in baroque style in the 18th century.

A beguinage is a community of laywomen known as “beguines”. Beguines were devout women who lived a religious and contemplative life without taking formal vows, allowing them to maintain personal property and freedom.

The Begijnhof Kortrijk, along with other Flemish beguinages, is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The beguinage has an intimate atmosphere and is an oasis of calm in the middle of Kortrijk's city centre.

Die schwedische Kirche St. Michael ist auf der Straße kaum als solche zu erkennen. Fassade und Eingang sind unauffällig.
Man betritt zunächst einen kleinen Raum, der eher an ein Wohnzimmer als eine Kirche erinnert. (--> PiP 1 klickbar)
Auch der eigentliche Kirchensaal ist ungewöhnlich anzusehen (--> PiP 2)

Die Geschichte des Doms lässt sich bis ins Mittelalter zurückverfolgen. Im Jahr 1465 wurde mit dem Bau der Oberpfarr- und Domkirche auf der Spreeinsel begonnen. Im Jahre 1747 veranlasste Friedrich der Große den Baumeister Johann Boumann d. Ä., ein barockes Gotteshaus mit Tambourkuppel zu errichten. Etwa 70 Jahre später wurde es von Karl Friedrich Schinkel im klassizistischen Stil innen und außen neu gestaltet.

Nach mehreren kleineren Umbauten am Berliner Dom beschloss Kaiser Wilhelm II., dass der Bau ihm in seiner bisherigen Form nicht mehr ausreichend prachtvoll erscheint. Im Jahr 1894 fällt die Entscheidung, dem Entwurf des Dombaumeisters Julius Carl Raschdorff zu folgen, der den Abriss des alten Doms vorsah. Die ehemalige Hof- und Domkirche der Hohenzollern wurde unter Kaiser Wilhelm II. in den Jahren 1894 bis 1905 neu errichtet.

Im Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde der Dom schwer beschädigt. Erst 1975 wurde mit dem Wiederaufbau begonnen, wobei sich der Dom auf DDR-Gebiet befand. Dabei wurden einzelne Bauelemente verändert und die ursprünglich zum Dom gehörende Denkmalskirche, die etwa ein Drittel der Grundfläche ausmachte, abgerissen.

Ursprünglich wies der Dom eine Länge von 114 Metern, eine Breite von 73 Metern sowie eine Höhe von 114 Metern auf und bot 2100 Sitzplätze. Aufgrund der während der SED-Diktatur 1975 abgerissenen Denkmalskirche, die etwa ein Drittel der Grundfläche ausmachte, der vereinfacht wiederaufgebauten Kuppel und der in die Predigtkirche versetzten Prunksarkophage ist er heute 90 Meter lang, 98 Meter hoch und bietet 1390 Sitzplätze. Die Kuppel weist einen Durchmesser von 33 Metern auf. Mit einer Grundfläche von 6270 Quadratmetern repräsentiert sie die größte evangelische Kirche Deutschlands.

Neben Gottesdiensten wird er auch für Staatsakte, Konzerte und andere Veranstaltungen genutzt.

The Onze LieveVrouwetoren (nicknamed Lange Jan), is a church tower in the city of Amersfoort. The building is more than 98 meters tall and reaches high above the inner city. It is one of the most eye-catching monuments in town and the third highest church tower in the Netherlands. The church that belonged to the tower was destroyed by a gunpowder explosion in the 18th century.
