A pair of 83 class 0-8-2 locomotives head a train of empty coal wagons for the opencast mine loading point at Turija on the 760mm gauge Banovici coal railway. The train is on the lower section of the line between the interchange with the state railway at Oskova and Banovici town.

The flagman waves off 'Kriegslok' 33-503 as it starts a train of coal empties for Banovici from the loop at Ljubace. It had just crossed with 33-248 heading the loaded coal train from the Dubrave mine.

The Kakanj coal fired power plant has a capacity of 450 MW and is one of the largest in Bosnia-Herzegovina. It is supplied with coal from the nearby Haljinici and Catici mines as well as from further afield.

Kriegslok 33-503 bursts out of the tunnel shortly before arriving at Ljubace with coal empties for the mine at Banovici. The mist and murk made for a difficult day of photography which dictated staying close to the line.

Kriegslok 33-064 shunts under the screens at the Sikulje mine, Lukavac, Bosnia-Herzegovina. This was one of the last places that this class of locomotive saw regular industrial use.

Loaded skip at the spoil chutes of the Oskova coal washery. This was a long ropeway running over wooded ridges to the dirt tips.

The now dismantled ropeway carrying spoil from the coal washery at Oskova to the tip had this protective structure over the road in Jezevak village.

A cold security man watches Yugoslav built USA tank 62-111 outside Durdevik Mine. It was unfortunate that the loco was not working on this visit. This colliery is situated about 20 kilometres south of Tuzla in Bosnia-Herzegovina. It mines brown coal from a depth of 100 metres.

62-638 goes about its duties at the Lukavac soda ash factory in Bosnia-herzegovina. We only had permission for the one visit into the works and the weather conditions proved to be extremely challenging.

Kriegslok 33-248 shunting the loading bunkers at the Dubrave coal mine in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Once loaded the coal will be taken to the interchange with the national railways several kilometres away from whence the coal will be taken to Tuzla.

The 600mm line from the Haljinici coal mine to the Catici washery was originally electrified but the wires were stolen during the civil war. When production restarted the line began operating diesel locomotives manufactured in Italy by Valente. The usual load is 15 one tonne tubs. The electric locomotives have been scrapped.
