Droylsden formed its own industrial Co-operative Society in December 1861, with 71 members and £104 4s 1d. The Society thrived and in 1876 it opened a large meeting hall above its shop facilities. Subsequent extensions included this 1911 building embellished in stone and terracotta. It's good to see the industrious bees at work. The building is no longer in Co-op use.

The architects were John Eaton & Son. In more recent imes it has been used as a nightclub but is currently empty.

The surviving building from the Butt Lane Co-operative Society premises near Kidsgrove, is an extension that was erected in 1903 and included a meeting hall. The original premises had terracotta signage but by 1903 the identification was in stark concrete.

Former Co-op shop at Ipswich. This building has been empty for some years and is due for demolition to be replaced by a new primary school. The project is currently stalled due to a 1960s mural at the rear of the building having been listed.

Terracotta on the frontage of the former No.1 Branch of the Loughborough Co-operative Society. The Co-operative movement was a big user of terracotta in the early 20th century.

SY 0959 leads its train back into the pit at Jalainur opencast coal mine. An impervious layer of rock within one of the coal seam meant that water flows erupted from the face at this level and formed a row of ice waterfalls in the bitterly cold conditions.

Early 20th century Cooperative Society buildings are often beautifully adorned with terracotta faience. This detail is at the front of the Grade II listed old co-op building on Northmoor Road in Longsight, Manchester that was completed in 1912 for Beswick Co-operative Society.

Co-operative society emblem on the former Co-op drapery store on the corner of Higher Bridge St & St George's Rd, Bolton. The building dates from 1904 and the terracotta work on the frontage is all the product of Henry Dennis' Hafod Red Brick Works at Ruabon.

Cream terracotta faience was the choice for the new central premises of Stockport Industrial Co-operative Society in 1926. The design was by local architectural partnership Wrathmell and Blackshaw.

Former Co-Operative Stores at New Bolsover. The village stores form part of the model village of New Bolsover. These were built c1891-4, possibly to the design of architects Brewill & Baily. The building is listed Grade II.

37 403 'Isle Of Mull' on the crossing at Grosmont on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway having run around its train after arrival from Pickering.

In the background is the shop of Britain's oldest independent co-operative society which was founded in 1867.

Tamworth Co-operative Society was formed in 1886 and remains independent. It operates this deprtment store as well as a supermarket and number of convenience stores. It is one of the few remaining truly independent co-ops in Britain.

100 years old and still proudly announcing ownership of this building at Cefn Mawr. It is now occupied by a firm specialising in sewing machine sales and repairs. The terracotta is almost certainly a product of the nearby works of J C Edwards.
