The surviving gasholder at Great Yarmouth was built in 1884 to the design of the consulting engineer Robert P Spice of London for the Great Yarmouth Gas Company.

National Grid has a national programme agreed with OFGEM to bring redundant sites such as these back into use, but the Grade II Listed status of the Victorian gasholder and its condition requires a different approach. Following detailed technical assessments it was agreed that the tank at the bottom of the gasholder should be removed and the large visible frame should then be refurbished in-situ. Work was due to start at the end of 2025.

National Grid gas storage site at Partington in Manchester. This was once the site of a large town gas works to which this was a main entrance. Since my visit the site has been closed and completely cleared.

The surviving gasholder at Great Yarmouth was built in 1864 and is listed Grade II. If someone doesn't paint it soon then the listing will not save it from decay and ultimate destruction.

The MAN type gasholder on Jackson Street, St Helens which was built in 1972 and was the largest of its kind in the UK. Standing 85m tall, it had the capacity to store 3m cubic feet of gas. It was demolished in 2012.

Redcar steelworks from the harbour South Gare. At the time the steelworks was due to close imminently but was eventually reopened for a short period before the final axe fell.

Framework of a gasholder seen from the train on the approach to Huddersfield Station. To the best of my knowledge this structure on, unsurprisingly, Gasworks Street, is still standing, but probably not for much longer.

Gasholder at Anderlues. S.A. Cokeries et Houillères d'Anderlues first erected coke ovens in 1904 which were replaced by new ones in 1931. The works produced foundry coke and was one of the smallest and oldest coke by-product plants still operating in Belgium at the time of closure in November 2002.

One of two gasholders remaining at at Partington where there was once a large gasworks completed for Manchester Corporation in 1929. In 1972 work commenced to convert much of the old gasworks site for Liquefied Natural Gas storage but the two holders remained with British gas as part of the local distribution network.

Meiderich ironworks, Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord. The gasholder in this preserved ironworks site is now filled with water and used for diving. It was constructed in 1920 and had a capacity of 20,000 cubic metres of blast furnace gas.
