Taken on the Riverboat Postman tour on the Hawkesbury River. These two bridges are for the motorway north from Sydney, that on the right is an older one, currently under maintenance. Cape Reinga lighthouse

At the northern extremity of New Zealand's North Island and now a very popular tourist destination. This lighthouse only began operation in 1941, replacing another on a nearby island. It was automated in 1987 and, since 2021, has operated on solar power with batteries. Happy Wednesday Wall, everyone.

A stitched panorama of the view from the lookout at Fitzroy Falls in the NSW Southern Highlands. I think that, with those vertical rockfaces, this should also suit for the Happy Wednesday Wall. Best viewed large.

Suggest viewing large. "Big Red" is the name given to this sand dune, reputedly the largest in the Simpson Desert and the first of an estimated 1140 if crossing the desert. It rises some 40 metres above the surrounding plains and is just 35km from Birdsville. Driving 4WDs up and down its steep sandy slopes has become a "must do" for off-road enthusiasts. This image from the east, the PiPs show it across the top and from the west. These aerial views tend to give a flattened impression of it.

Bedourie is the administrative centre of the Shire of Diamantina, which also has the towns of Birdsville and Betoota. The Shire is the largest in Queensland and covers an area of almost 95,000 sq km, which makes it larger than Hungary, Portugal or Ireland (among other countries). The permanent population of Bedourie in the 2016 Census was 122 (the entire Shire had 266).

Anyway, it's a long trip to get there (over 1,600 km from Brisbane, the State capital), so take a rest on the bench (also seen in the PiP). Happy Bench Monday and best wishes for the week, everyone.

Betoota benches

Betoota is a ghost town in western Queensland, with a permanent population of nil, but it does have a (restored) pub and a racetrack. The satirical online newspaper, the "Betoota Advocate" claims to originate here as "Australia's oldest newspaper". See also PiPs.

Betoota is now a "must visit" for travellers and not only is the pub busy, but it has benches outside for those wishing to be in the sunshine. With that thought, I'll wish everyone a very Happy Bench Monday and a good week to follow.

Benches became increasingly difficult to find as I travelled further into the outback! Probably best viewed on black. Quite an impressive view from this bench - see PiP#1. Wishing everyone a very Happy Bench Monday.

This lookout is dedicated to Deon Brook, a young man from the area, killed in a helicopter accident nearby - see PiP#2.

Heading back from travels (home soon) and these autumn leaves were striking. There had been others earlier, but not quite as well preserved. The high ISO and shutter speed were to compensate for a bouncing moving vehicle.

This painting of a Platypus on this Rochester silo was done by Jimmy Dvate, just behind and a few years after his earlier works there (see my previous posting). We were fortunate to be able to visit as part of the events for the National Muster of the Renault 4CV Register of Australia. Second image in the PiP.

I am finalising my preparations to head away for another trip and expect I will be largely offline from now through the rest of May. With that thought, I wish you all the very best over coming weeks and a Happy Fence Friday.
