Bulleid pacific 34067 'Tangmere' heads the Great Britain XVIII tour up the Midland Railway Disley cutoff line on its way to Carlisle. The train is approaching the Hatherlow Lane footbridge in Hazel Grove. It was over sixty years ago that I used to spot trains from this bridge and it was a real bit of nostalgia to see steam again at this spot, even if it wasn't the ex LMS and LNER locomotives that we used to see. As kids we knew this location as 'Skelly Bridge'. There weren't any trees and it was double track back in the day.

On the day of the public reopening of the Caldon Low branch of the Churnet Valley Railway, 8F 8624 climbs hard after passing the former station at Winkhill. This section no longer carries trains after the line was lifted east of the current terminus at Ipstones.

Mogul 9351 approaches its train after running round at Minehead on the West Somerset Railway.

This locomotive was originally built in 1934 as 5101 class 2-6-2T No. 5193 but converted to a 2-6-0 tender engine following its purchase for preservation.

5193 was withdrawn from service June 1962 and sold for scrap to Woodham Brothers and it arrived in the Barry scrapyard in September 1962.

5193 was purchased by the 5193 Fund and moved by road to Steamport at Southport in August 1979. Following the closure of Steamport and the removal of the stock to the newly formed Ribble Steam Railway at Preston 5193 was purchased by the West Somerset Railway (WSR). It was moved to Mineheadin December 1998.

In June 2000 at the AGM of the WSR plc it was formally announced that a plan had been drawn up to convert the 2-6-2T to a 2-6-0 tender locomotive which would provide the railway with a operating flexibility due to its larger water and coal capacity.

It was rebuilt by the West Somerset Railway into a 2-6-0 resembling a small boilered version of the GWR 4300 class, and numbered 9351.

In September 2004 the completed locomotive was moved out of the shed at Minehead and the fire lit pending a visit from the boiler inspector. Shortly afterwards 5193 entered service as a 2-6-0 carrying the number 9351.

Steam trains on the line between Kidsgrove and Cheadle Hulme are a rare event and it is many years since the last one passed through Macclesfield. 'The Mancunian' run by the Railway Touring Company was too good to miss and with 6233 'Duchess of Sutherland' at the front it is seen heading north alongside the Bollin at Macclesfield's Riverside Park. The line is downhill here and it was a very warm day which meant no exhaust from the locomotive.

Two Black 5s on the Buxton Spa Express digging into the climb after being stopped at Norbury Crossing to allow the scheduled dmu stopping service to get far enough ahead not to cause problems later on. This view is from the bridge that once carried the Macclesfield Bollington and Marple Railway over the top of the LNWR line at Middlewood Station. The weather forecast said fair - it was raining!

Earl of Mount Edgcumbe snapped just before reaching the summit of Shap with a northbound special. I was in the area on other business and just happened to spot the people waiting lineside. There was just time to grab the camera and join them for a photo.

The "High Peak" railtour from Tyseley to Buxton was headed by 45305 and is seen arriving at Peak Forest. The lack of exhaust was very frustrating as the driver shut off as he had not had a clear view of the signal beyond the bridge.
