West Burton power station was on part load whilst beyond the Cottam power station was hard at work on this bright cold winter day in January 2019. All now closed and under demolition.

Cooling plant and a Braithwaite modular water tank outside the Caster No.5 building at Scunthorpe steelworks.

The Braithwaite company dates back to 1884 under the name of Braithwaite and Kirk at Crown Bridge Works, West Bromwich. Today the business continues as part of the Rowecord Group. www.braithwaite.co.uk/

Six cooling towers mark the location of the former Thorpe Marsh power station. The 1000mw station opened in the 1960s and was closed in 1994 at a time when coal-fired generation was becoming unpopular and uneconomic. The main buildings were demolished in 1996 but the towers remained until 2012.

The Ineos operated Grangemouth refinery was the largest industrial plant by volume in Scotland and supplied much of the oil based fuels used in Scotland and the North of England. Crude oil refining ended in April 2025 and the site is now transitioning to an import facilty for fuels.

Fiddler's Ferry Power Station could burn up to 16,000 tonnes of coal a day and was also capable of co-firing biomass. Opened in 1971, the station had a generating capacity of 1,989 megawatts and was latterly operated by Scottish and Southern Energy.

Late afternoon sun on the cooling tower of the Innospec plant at Stanlow which manufactures fuel additives and, according to its website, is the world's only manufacturer of tetraethyl lead products.

Eggborough Power Station generated with four 500 megawatt units, the first of which started working in 1967. The station closed in September 2018.

I went for a last look at the Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station before it closes at the end of the month and was largely confounded by the weather. Over two days it was so murky and foggy that it proved almost impossible to see the power station unless very close. I ended up with a few shots of the cooling towers taken from the roadway outside the East Midlands Parkway railway station.

Back in 2010 Ferrybridge 'C' power station was still hard at work. Operated at closure in 2016 by Scottish and Southern Energy plc this 2000 megawatt power station first generated electricity in 1966.

At the time only months from closure, the 2,000 Mw EDF owned coal-fired station at Cottam was hard at work when I last visited. Opened in 1969 it is now gutted and slowly being demolished.

West Burton power

At West Burton there were two power stations on the River Trent near Gainsborough. One is a coal-fired power station, which was commissioned in 1968, and the second is a combined cycle gas turbine power station, commissioned in 2011. Both stations were owned and operated by EDF Energy. This is the coal fired station which generated 2,000 MW and was the first station of this capacity in Britain. It was closed during 2023.

Fiddler's Ferry Power Station back when it could burn up to 16,000 tonnes of coal a day at full capacity. The station had a generating capacity of 1,989 megawatts. It was closed in 2020 and today four of the cooling towers will be demolished as the destruction of the structures begins.
