Chinchorro mummies at the Museo Arqueológico San Miguel de Azapa.

These mummies of the Chinchorro hunter gatherer culture in the Atacama desert in the far north of Chile are 2000 years older than the Egyptian mummies! The oldest artificially preserved mummy dates from 5050 BC, the oldest naturally preserved mummy is from 7020 BC.

In 2021 the Chinchorro sites and mummification process in Arica and Caleta/Valle Camarones were inscribed as UNESCO world heritage.

Das Museum in San Miguel de Azapa, hier noch der Altbau. Seit kurzem ist der Neubau eröffnet, der 2021 begonnen wurde, als die Chinchorro-Mumien Welterbe-Status erhielten.

Salar de Surire is ringed by volcanoes and lies at 4250m in the far north of Chile, just across the border from Bolivia. It is home (among others) to all 3 Chilean species of flamingo, to vicuña, viscacha, ñandú (suri) and puma. The western part of the salar is used for Lithium mining.

Humberstone and Samta Laura Saltpeter Works were inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 2005 and immediately put on the list of world heritage in danger (until 2019) to get funds for preserving and stabilizing the remaining buildings.
There had been extensive damage partly due to earthquakes but also because of looting. The harsh desert climate in combination with wind and coastal fog (camanchaca) had left most surfaces covered with a mixture of sand and salt, corroding the metal parts.

11.09.73 was the day of the miltary coup in Chile, and on 16.09.actor and singer Victor Jara was brutally murdered in Santiago's National stadium where 40.000 were imprisoned, tortured and 70 murdered. Thousands "disappeared", poet Pablo Neruda was poisoned in hospital (someone gave him a deadly botulin injection).

On my first visit to Santiago in 2004 some of the houses around the Plaza de la Constitución still showed bullet holes from the coup, by 2008 everything had been renovated.

The bus of the Carabineros de Chile (noted for their brutality during the dicatorship) gave me the creeps...

In Barrio Paris-Londres there are many plaques in the pavement of "disappeared" and murdered young victims of the coup

Viscachas look a bit like rabbits with a long tail but are actually related to Chinchillas. They live in rock cracks or caves in the Andes/ Altiplano at an altitude of up to 5000m.

A few of the hundreds of fumaroles, hot springs, geysers etc. in El Tatio Geyser Field. It is the 3rd largest (after Yellowstone and Kamchatka) and together with neighbouring Sol de Mañana (Bolivia) the highest in the world.

Conguillío National Park is in the Andes, in the provinces of Cautín and Malleco, in the Araucanía Region of Chile also known as Region IX. Its name derives from the Mapuche word for "water with Araucaria seeds".

Among the attractions in the park are the Llaima volcano, Sierra Nevada and wild landscapes characterized by islands of vegetation completely surrounded by vast areas of lava flows and is a humid and wet area.

There are also extensive forests, formed mainly by Araucarias and Nothofagus species, and small lakes within the park.

It is also known as Los Paraguas (The Umbrellas), due to the shape of the Monkey Puzzle trees.

Der Nationalpark Conguillío (span. Parque Nacional Conguillío ) liegt in Chile in der Region IX, der Región de la Araucanía. Der Park ist auch unter dem Namen Los Paraguas (Die Regenschirme, in Anspielung auf die Form der zahlreichen großen Araukarien) bekannt. In der Sprache der Mapuche-Indianer bedeutet Conguillio so viel wie Wasser mit Pinienkernen.

Der 60.833 ha große Nationalpark liegt etwa 80 km östlich von Temuco in den Anden. Höchster Punkt ist der aktive Vulkan Llaima mit zurzeit etwa 3145 Metern, der zuletzt im Januar 2008 ausbrach. Bei diesem Ausbruch wuchs er von seiner vorherigen Höhe von 3125 Metern, die auf Karten erscheint, zur jetzigen Höhe. Es gibt mehrere Gebirgsseen, von denen der Lago Conguillío und die Laguna Verde die größten sind. Die kleine Laguna Arco Iris existiert erst seit 1994, als bei einem Ausbruch des Vulkans ein Lavadamm entstand und den See aufstaute.
