Sunday Challenge: Have a seat!

Take a photograph of a chair. It can be an upholstered chair, a bench, a hard-backed chair or anything that you sit on. You can photograph it empty or in use. You can show all of it or just part of it. Consider whether you want to illustrate a feeling (restfulness, fatigue, comfort, etc.) or a design example. Use your imagination to create an interesting photograph and have fun doing so.

Red Star Erguotou (红星二锅头) is an iconic baijiu brand from Beijing, widely seen as part of the city’s cultural identity rather than just a drink. The name Erguotou means “second pot head,” a reference to the middle cut of the distillation process that gives the liquor its clean but potent character.

Founded in 1949, when twelve small distilleries were combined into the first state-owned liquor company of New China, Red Star became known as the “people’s baijiu” for its honest quality and affordability. It was served at official events, factories, and neighborhood eateries alike—an everyday spirit deeply linked with Beijing life.

Over the decades, Red Star Erguotou came to represent hard work, directness, and pride in simplicity. Its flat green bottles are instantly recognizable symbols of local life, often nicknamed 小二 (“Little Two”) by Beijingers. At gatherings or street meals, sharing a small bottle means camaraderie and trust. Today, Red Star remains a nostalgic yet living part of the city’s story—a humble drink that still carries the warmth, humour, and sincerity of old socialist Beijing.

Chinese tea ceremony, as evoked by this stage performance, is less a fixed “ritual code” than a theatrical distillation of values that evolved around gongfu cha in South China from the late Ming, and especially the Qing, period. At its core lies the idea that tea reveals character: historically, southern literati used meticulous brewing and tasting sessions to judge not only the leaves but also a host’s refinement, self‑control, and sensitivity to timing, temperature, and social nuance.

Modern tea‑art performances (茶艺表演) turn this ethos into choreography, with schools systematising gestures, cup arrangements, and even hand positions to visually embody harmony, respect, purity, and tranquillity in a way an audience can read at a glance. The music, costume, and stylised slowness are less survivals of a single dynasty than contemporary inventions that compress centuries of practice into a few minutes on stage, making the “Way of Tea” intelligible to tourists, students, and urban Chinese who seldom drink tea this way at home.

In doing so, this performative branch has helped propel gongfu cha into the realm of “intangible cultural heritage” and onto the global stage, turning what began as a regional oolong‑brewing method into a widely recognised emblem of Chinese elegance, often contrasted with the more codified, Zen‑inflected Japanese tea ceremony.

Einkaufspassage "Galleria", Grosse Bleichen.

Die im Juni 2014 eröffnete, in schwarz-weissem Marmor gehaltene Einkaufspassage stammt vom Schweizer Designer- und Architekten-Ehepaar Haussmann. Inspiriert wurden sie von den Einkaufspassagen des 19. Jahrhunderts in Paris.
Die Passage verbindet die Grosse Bleichen und den Bleichenfleet und wurde vom renommierten Design-Magazin "Wallpaper" ausgezeichnet.
