The Australian airline QANTAS (short for Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services) operated its first flight in 1920 from its original base at Longreach Airport. Today that airport houses the QANTAS Founders Museum and a range of aircraft it once operated. See also the PiP.

Again, time and travel prevented a stop, but there is a rather large wall. Happy Wednesday Wall, everyone.

The two aircraft in this image were water-bombers, working on the huge fires in south-east Australia during late 2019-early 2020. The nearest aircraft, on the left, was a C130 with the identification "Bomber 134" and had come from the USA with its 3 man crew.

Memorialising its sad loss with its crew shortly after, three years ago on 23 January 2020, in a combination of huge fires, bad winds, and mountainous terrian. Brave men and a sadly remembered event. In the PiP, smoke from nearby fires at the time.

Qantas flight QF63, taken just over 12 hours ago, at 34,000 ft about 30 minutes from its Sydney departure. It has been en route across the southern Indian Ocean to South Africa and, as I post this, still has another 1.5 hours to travel before arrival. The aircraft is a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

Flybe Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 G-ECOM rolling out on runway 08 at Exeter on a misty February morning. For some unknown reason, taxiway C was closed and the aircraft rolled to the end of the runway to turn round before a long backtrack to B.

The Dash-8-200 aircraft arriving to take us home. This gives some idea of the tightness of the airstrip, tucked between hills - it is only about 860M long and these aircraft are among the few airliners that can use it. HFF everyone, and best wishes for the weekend.

More tourists arriving on the daily aircraft (some days there are more). The number of tourists on the island is capped at a maximum of 400. That's the end of the very short runway for the small airport to the left - when I flew there in 1974 (see my album "Flying Boat Days") the runway was incomplete and this was the last flying boat service in the world. This musical link seems to fit. Taken from a kayak. :-)

When I came to this site from F*r, I copied several albums across - but somehow never posted many of the images. Time to fill the gaps!

Cross a Russian An24 with American Pratt & Whitney engines, build it in China, and the Xian MA60 is the result. I needn't have been apprehensive, flying in it felt much like any other commuter style airliner.
