I hadn't seen one in a long time, but these eyes immediately fascinated me. It was sitting on a leaf, and I was able to photograph it very closely at my leisure! You see them especially in summer near bodies of water, forests, and meadows. They grow to about 8 to 10 mm in length, with a slender body, gray-marbled wings, and strikingly iridescent compound eyes. Their behavior is extremely quiet, allowing for a virtually silent approach. They become particularly active before or during humid, rainy weather (hence the name). Only female horseflies suck the blood of mammals and humans, as they need the proteins for egg maturation. Males feed exclusively on nectar and plant sap. Horseflies are so-called "pool feeders." They cut the skin with their mouthparts instead of pricking it finely like mosquitoes, which is immediately noticeable and painful :))
Pip1-5: Close-up photos of the insect

The individual flowers only appear sporadically on my plants, directly next to the typical blue flowers. This happens regularly in nature through spontaneous genetic mutations or seed dispersal. Its flowers are white, often interwoven with very fine, slightly pink or violet veins. Identical to the blue form – bushy growth (60 to 80 cm tall) with deeply lobed, fresh green leaves. It blooms from June to August and prefers sunny to partially shaded locations in nutrient-rich, consistently moist meadows.

The larva has an elongated, slightly caterpillar-like body with three clearly visible pairs of legs at the front. Its color ranges from dark gray to blue-green with striking yellow-orange spots on its sides. The body is wrinkled and covered with small, bristly warts. It grows from approximately 1.5 mm after hatching to about 7 to 10 mm before pupation. The larva begins hunting shortly after hatching. A single larva consumes up to 400 to 500 aphids during its development period of about 2 to 3 weeks.
Pip1-4: Close-ups of the larva

The larva has an elongated, slightly caterpillar-like body with three clearly visible pairs of legs at the front. Its color ranges from dark gray to blue-green with striking yellow-orange spots on its sides. The body is wrinkled and covered with small, bristly warts. It grows from approximately 1.5 mm after hatching to about 7 to 10 mm before pupation. The larva begins hunting shortly after hatching. A single larva consumes up to 400 to 500 aphids during its development period of about 2 to 3 weeks.
Pip1-4: Close-ups of the larva

For me, photography is always a wonderful form of therapy, and it allows me to be out in nature. I'm always on the lookout for beautiful natural subjects like insects, butterflies, beetles, flowers, plants, mushrooms, and other things. I'm always amazed by what you can find! For World Photography Day, you're supposed to mention photographers who inspire me to explore other genres and get ideas from them. Keith and James are among them. They always surprise me with their fantastic still life compositions. You can see in their pictures how much joy, fun, and love they put into creating these beautiful results. That's now inspired me to try my hand at still life photography from time to time. :))

Leurs magnifiques natures mortes me surprennent toujours. :))
