View northwesterly; the Benchmark Summit (2275 m/7464 ft) is the high point at the end of the ridge we're on just right of center. The Honey Lake Basin is the distant valley beyond, in California. There _should_ be lots more snow at this time; Jan 2022 was the driest on record, with zero recorded precipitation. We're just below the true summit (2282 m/7487 ft) here.

Oh, Ipernity "Location" name is not right. This is an steep inlet on the south coast of Boot Head peninsula, protected by Maine Coast Heritage Trust. Lubec Maine is more than 15 kilometers away: a village, not this wild coast.

Cliff height here is about 13 meters.

And, a short distance west of here is even a more wild rugged bit of coastline. I missed the trail to it this time (and it is labelled as a "beach" on the local map, which I wasn't interested in anyway; so I wasn't diligent in searching). Will try harder next time, hopefully at high tide after a storm.

Tamarack Lake (another one!) in front, Ralston Lake behind. Framed by Sierra junipers. Off the Pacific Crest Trail near Echo Lakes, California, looking south. At present (Aug 29 2021) this view is completely obscured by dense smoke from the Caldor fire. But at least the bare granite makes a good firebreak!

Where it crosses Colorado State Route 141. Looking downstream (north). (The inset shows an upstream view.) The river ultimately joins the Colorado about 10 miles upstream from Moab, Utah. The river's name is significantly shortened from the Spanish original, "El Río de Nuestra Señora de Dolores", River of Our Lady of Sorrows.

Looking south, where the Summit Trail crosses. Elevation here is a bit over 8000 ft/2440 m. The Santa Rosa Mountains, up next to the Oregon border, are another little-known Nevada range with peaks near 10,000 feet. The fact that the lingering snow is mostly just below the crests on the east side shows the direction of the prevailing winter storms! The insets show some other views in the vicinity. This area lies in the Santa Rosa-Paradise Peak Wilderness.

Well, yes. Not exactly a "river" by the standards of lots of places. But it's got water! Looking west (downstream); about 5-10 miles downstream the river bends south to join the main Humboldt by Winnemucca, Nevada. The snowcapped mountains on the skyline are the Santa Rosa Range, with peaks just under 10,000 ft. Much of the high country there is now wilderness.

Reynolds Brook flows into Orange River, which is unseen along the forest edge in the background; all are part of The Orange River Conservation Area, one of 15 tracts protected by The Downeast Coastal Conservacy. The Orange River parcel includes a 6 mile (9.7 kilometer) easily navigated flat-water canoe trail. Further downstream toward where the Orange River drains into tidewater estuary are two almost 200-year-old dams which establish the water levels and really the whole ecosystem of the lower Orange River drainage. Like all dams in Maine, they are under attack by activists who want streams to be totally accessible to migrating alewives and salmon, even if it means destruction of viable existing ecosystems that have developed over the recent centuries.

No, not _that_ Rome! The clump of trees in the distance marks Rome, Oregon, which has a cafe, a gas station, and a convenience store--maybe even a bar. It is famous among whitewater enthusiasts for being the site of the upper put-in point on the Lower Owyhee River (foreground), which flows thru a spectacular desert canyon downstream from here. Rome is on US Highway 95, which crosses the river about a half-mile downstream (inset), and that highway provides the river access.
