Ces mouches doivent leur nom à leurs pattes remarquablement longues et fines (« échasses »). Leur corps est élancé et généralement de couleur sombre. Elles affectionnent les endroits humides et ombragés comme les lisières de forêts, les prairies, les buissons ou les berges des rivières, où on les observe souvent se reposer tranquillement sur les feuilles. Elles se nourrissent généralement de nectar, de sève, de matières organiques en décomposition ou de petits insectes. Lorsqu'elles sont posées sur des feuilles ou des tiges, elles agitent fréquemment leurs pattes avant, généralement claires, de haut en bas. The upper sides of the wings are a warm rust-brown to orange-brown with a darker border and indistinct, lighter spots. Males have a clearly visible, dark, oblique scent stripe on their forewings. The underside of the wings has a yellowish-green tinge with faded, pale yellow spots. As with many skippers, when at rest it folds its forewings roof-like, slightly obliquely upwards, while the hindwings remain spread more horizontally. It has a broad head with widely spaced antennae that are hooked at the ends. It can be seen from June to August :))

Le dessus des ailes est d'un brun rouille chaud à brun orangé, bordé d'une bordure plus foncée et parsemé de taches claires et indistinctes. Le mâle présente une bande odorante oblique, foncée et bien visible sur ses ailes antérieures. Le dessous des ailes est teinté de jaune-vert et parsemé de taches jaune pâle délavées. Comme chez de nombreux hespéries, au repos, il replie ses ailes antérieures en forme de toit, légèrement obliquement vers le haut, tandis que les ailes postérieures restent déployées plus horizontalement. Sa tête est large et ses antennes, largement espacées, sont recourbées à leur extrémité. On peut l'observer de juin à août :))

The Western Pasque Flower, Anemone (Pulsatilla) occidentalis, is found in the western United States and Canada from Washington and Montana northward. It is one of the earliest wildlflowers to bloom, often showing its flowers through the snow. This example was photographed near Sunburst Lake in Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park in British Columbia.

On another note, my postings will be sporadic until the middle of August. We leave within a week first for Northern Ireland and then for Norway. I'll post as I have opportunity, but do not know what kind of internet access we will have while away.

Mein ca. 1,80 m großer Säulenkaktus, der im Hauskeller den Winter überdauert und im Sommer im Garten steht, hat dieses Jahr sechs Blütenknospen. Im Laufe der letzten Tage sind alle aufgeblüht. Die Blütenöffnung erfolgt in der Dämmerung und bis zur Morgendämmerung ist die Blüte vorbei. Das Foto machte im letzten Sonnenlicht. Der Blütendurchmesser beträgt ca. 15 cm.

My columnar cactus, which is about 1.80 m tall and spends the winter in the basement and the summer out in the garden, has produced six flower buds this year. Over the past few days, all of them have opened. The flowers open at dusk, and by dawn they are already finished. I took the photo in the last sunlight. The flower is approximately 15 cm in diameter.
