Pa'O girls and women mostly wear their Bamar clothing and dress their head with this typical red scarf.
Bamar also known as Burman is an other ethnic group, the majority of Burma. Before particularly Pa'O women were forced to wear indigo-dyed clothing, to signify their status.
It makes fun for us to get close to this people and to learn about their history.

The boy on the boat is an Intha, one out of 70,000 of them. He lives in a village bordering the lake.
Most transportation on the lake by the Intha's is traditionally by very small boats, rowing with one rudder.

The weavers have estimated that fibers from around 120,000 lotus stems are needed to weave the fabric for a costume. The fabric is then dyed either with chemical or natural dyes to a reddish- brown shade before being cut into patches of different sizes and machine sewn together in rows to resemble the mosaic-like appearance of community owned rice fields prevalent at the time of the Buddha.

Burmese women colour their (and their childrens) faces with thanaka bark. It is ground into a powder, mixed with water and applied onto the face. It is said to protects the skin against the sun - and it lightens the colour of the face.
