The Mireuk Daebul at Bongeunsa — a 23 m stone Maitreya, the tallest stone statue in Korea, carved under Master Yeongam from 1986 to 1996 with donations from over 10,000 temple members and dedicated to Korean reunification. The temple itself dates to 794 and was the head temple of Korean Seon Buddhism from 1551 to 1936 — now sitting a few hundred metres from the COEX mall in Gangnam.

The "hat" is a stone canopy, descended from the honorific parasol held over rulers and holy figures — and it also keeps rain off the face.

On Sundays, Avenida Paulista feels less like a busy avenue and more like a long, improvised music festival. The cars disappear, and suddenly the asphalt belongs to people: families strolling, couples holding hands, friends on bikes, and small crowds forming around whoever brought an instrument and enough courage to plug in.

In Slovakia, the linden (usually Tilia cordata, the small‑leaved lime) is not just a common tree, but a national emblem and an ancient Slavic symbol. It has been associated with peace, unity, love, and protection, and was venerated long before modern national awareness.

Historically, communities gathered under large linden trees for meetings, celebrations and even legal proceedings, and Slovak Romantic writers used the linden as a symbol of homeland and destiny. The tree’s heart‑shaped leaves and fragrant blossoms appear in Slovak art, literature and design as motifs of identity and endurance.

Practically, linden blossom is still used in herbal teas for calming and medicinal purposes, and its pollen contributes to distinctive local honey. In many towns and villages in Slovakia and neighbouring Czech lands, linden trees are planted near churches, in central squares, or along streets, becoming natural gathering points and living monuments of cultural heritage.

This is my mum, my brother and me in front of the entrance to the Sierra Maestra residential complex in Havana, where we lived in the early 1980s. Our pride was the car in the foreground: a beautifully designed orange Škoda 110 R coupé, built in Czechoslovakia between 1970 and 1980. In Cuba, where the streets were dominated by gigantic, aging American cars from the 1940s and 1950s, this low, sporty silhouette looked wonderfully exotic and always attracted attention. For many people it was probably the closest thing to a Porsche they had ever seen driving past their front door. For us it was just the family car, quietly threading our everyday life into the larger history of that time and place. We eventually sold it in Havana – and I still sometimes wonder if it might somehow be surviving on the Cuban roads today.

This photograph was taken in Guwahati, the capital of Assam, India, on an older iPhone. We were staying with our friends Manna and Yuveka. It had been raining all day, and when the rain eased a little we went out to see the town. Down by the banks of the Brahmaputra – a huge, majestic and muddy river – I took a few shots of the boatmen. I don’t know their stories, unfortunately; I can only guess that these are small transport or fishing canoes. If anyone knows more about life on the river here, I would be very glad to hear their experiences.

The airplane mounted on the roof of the Deutsches Technikmuseum in Berlin is a Douglas C‑47, the military transport version of the Douglas DC‑3. It is dramatically fixed above the entrance on a steel structure, so it appears to be flying over the city. This placement turns the aircraft into a striking landmark and an immediate visual link to Berlin’s aviation past.

The C‑47 recalls the Berlin Airlift of 1948–1949, when such planes — nicknamed “Raisin Bombers” or “Candy Bombers” — flew supplies into blockaded West Berlin and sometimes dropped sweets for children. Siberian ibex (Capra sibirica) rest and climb here on the rocky “Steinbockfelsen” of Zoo Berlin, a structure that offers them many ledges, caves, and vantage points reminiscent of natural cliff faces. Their permanent horns grow throughout life and, together with specially cushioned hooves, allow them to balance precisely even on narrow outcrops. Family groups usually consist of females with their kids, while the more robust males with the longest horns often stay slightly apart and keep watch over the surroundings.

I’ve written about this famous teak bridge before, but rather than simply showcasing the structure, I wanted to capture close-up portraits of the people who use it daily. To me, it is a living walkway for the local community, not just a scenic landmark.

In 2012, as Myanmar began to emerge from years of isolation, the bridge became a vibrant, sometimes chaotic meeting point where monks, farmers, and vendors mingled with the first wave of foreign tourists. Photographing it then allowed me to capture that unique energy of different worlds colliding on a narrow strip of wood.

Looking back, those crowded scenes feel almost surreal. Since the 2021 military coup, tourism has collapsed and the international crowds have vanished. While travel to the area may be slowly returning, the atmosphere is fundamentally different. Back then, the country was fueled by the hope of democratic change; today, the people face a bleak future under a military junta that has left them isolated and grappling with a dire human rights crisis.

The roof of Futurium in Berlin is both an accessible city terrace and a piece of environmental technology, conceived as part of the museum’s narrative about possible futures. Architecturally, it forms a shallow basin: the sloping planes channel all rainwater to a low point, where it is collected in a cistern and reused for cooling and other non‑potable purposes, turning a simple downpour into part of the building’s technical cycle.

Almost the entire roof is covered by a dense field of photovoltaic and solar‑thermal modules – sometimes described as a “solar sea” – which supply a substantial share of Futurium’s own electricity and heat demand and support its minimum‑energy, BNB‑Gold certification.

Unusually for a technology roof of this kind, visitors are allowed onto it: a skywalk leads around the upper edge, offering views over the Spree, the government district, and the Chancellery, so the public can literally walk on the energy landscape. A bit of trivia: the architects designed roof, façade, and technical systems as one integrated envelope, so the building’s futuristic image is inseparable from the way it manages sun and water.
