Die Starke Stiege hinauf

Am Ende des Rauschengrunds kann man nur über die Starke Stiege dem Grund entkommen. Sie zählt zu den anspruchsvolleren Stiegen im Elbsandsteingebirge. Auf dem Bild ist am Ende des unteren Drittels links ein Steiggriff zu erkennen, der beim Hinaufklettern hilft. Etwas oberhalb der Bildmitte ist ein Wanderer zu erkennen, der die Stiege vor mir erklommen. Anhand der Birke sieht man gut, dass die Wand ziemlich senkrecht hinauf führt und nicht ganz einfach zu erklimmen ist.

Die Skulptur eines Mannes, der anstatt des Pferdes einen Plug über den Acker zieht, steht an der Hauptstraße in Bahlingen am Kaiserstuhl. Ob der umgepflügte Acker für Feldfrüchte oder den Weinanbau ist, kann ich nicht sagen. Beide landwirtschaftlichen Nutzungsgebiete werden rund um den Ort bewirtschaftet.

A bit of brutalist architecture at Huddersfield bus station. It was opened on Sunday 1 December 1974 and is the busiest bus station in West Yorkshire. It is currently undergoing major renovation works.

Beneath Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, Luray Caverns is a cathedral built one drop at a time. Mineral-rich water has sculpted its immense chambers into forests of stalactites, stalagmites, columns, and flowing stone. At Luray, a stalactite grows approximately one inch every 120 years. Its largest stalactite is approximately 70,000 years old and predates the asteroid that brought about the demise of the dinosaurs.

Olympia was the sanctuary of Zeus in the northwest of the Peloponnese. It was the site of the ancient Olympic Games.

The modern town of Archaia Olympia is located on the outskirts of the ancient sanctuary.

The excavation site is vast and complex. The ancient author Pausanias mentions about seventy temples, some of which have been reconstructed. Much of what the archaeologists have found is on display at the Archaeological Museum.

Station 's-Hertogenbosch is een treinstation in 's-Hertogenbosch in de Nederlandse provincie Noord-Brabant, dat is uitgegroeid tot een knooppunt van spoorlijnen in drie richtingen. In de loop der jaren is het station driemaal vervangen.

Het eerste station in 's-Hertogenbosch werd geopend op 1 november 1868. De eerste trein die arriveerde, kwam uit Boxtel. Omdat 's-Hertogenbosch toen nog de vestingstatus had, moest er vrij zicht zijn op de polder ten westen van de stad en mochten er buiten de vestingwerken geen blijvende, stenen bouwwerken staan. Het stationsgebouw was daarom opgetrokken in houten vakwerkbouw, zodat het bij oorlogsgevaar snel kon worden afgebroken.

In 1896 werd het houten stationsgebouw wegens ruimtegebrek vervangen door een monumentaal bakstenen station naar een ontwerp van Eduard Cuypers. Dit tweede station werd een paar honderd meter zuidelijker gebouwd, en de sporen werden wat westelijker gelegd. Het station werd verplaatst om vanuit de stad en de wijk een mooier aanzicht te krijgen. Men kon dan vanuit de stad rechtuit het stationsgebouw inlopen. Het gebouw was 124,5 meter lang en tot zestien meter diep. Op 16 september 1944, tijdens Operatie Market Garden, werd dit station in brand geschoten door jachtbommenwerpers en raakte zwaar beschadigd.

NS-directeur ir. F.Q. den Hollander besloot uiteindelijk om het beschadigde tweede station niet meer te herbouwen, hoewel veel inwoners van Den Bosch dit wel wilden. Den Hollander vond het station van Cuypers maar ouderwets en herbouw achtte hij te duur. Het uitgebrande stationsgebouw werd in 1950 gesloopt en vervangen door een bescheidener, modern gebouw naar ontwerp van Sybolt van Ravesteyn dat twee jaar later gereedkwam. De historische perronoverkappingen bleven echter gehandhaafd.

In 1998 is het derde stationsgebouw op zijn beurt vervangen door een moderner passage-station. De overkapping werd daarbij uitgebreid naar het tweede eilandperron. Het lag in de planning om ook de oude stationsoverkapping, die dateerde van 1896, in haar geheel te vervangen. Na protest van een lokale actiegroep vanwege de monumentale waarde werd hiervan afgezien.
