Walking alone is not the best idea. But there is a well organized rescue service all around the Lake of Neusiedel (Austria) this night. Let's hope, his smartphone is ok.

Allein durch die Nacht. Aus Sicherheitsgründen nicht die beste Idee. Immerhin gibt einen gut organisierten Notdienst rund um den See in dieser Nacht.

At dusk the snow slush began to freeze. A cold wind blew from the Lake of Neusiedel (Austria). This part of the National Park of Neusiedel is called "Hell".

Alexander Rüdiger, an extreme marathon runner, said: "The 2015 Burgenland-extrem was more severe than the North Pole Marathon 2013."

Der Gatsch auf dem Boden beginnt mit einbrechender Nacht zu gefrieren. Vom Neusiedler See her wehte ein kalter Wind. Dieser Abschnitt des Nationalparks Neusiedler See trägt den Namen "Hölle" an diesem Abend zu Recht.

Alexander Rüdiger, Extrem-Marathonläufer, bezeichnete die 2015er Burgenland-extrem "härter als den Nordpol-Marathon", den er 2013 gelaufen war:

After 11 hours and 60 kilometers two thirds of the participants finished the hike in Apetlon (Austria). It required a lot of self-confidence and self-motivation to leave the warm atmosphere of the rest stop and to continue the hike in view of the coaches.

Zwei Drittel der Starterinnen und Starter sind in Apetlon (Burgenland, Österreich) - nach 11 Stunden bzw. 60 km - am Ende ihrer Kräfte und brechen ab. Im Anblick der erlösenden Busse weiterzugehen - aus der Wärme des Gasthauses hinaus in die Dämmerung - braucht viel Selbstvertrauen und Eigenmotivation.

Imagine you have been walking since 9 hours. Rain and snow are touching your face since 4 hours. You didn't arrive at the rest stop yet, which marks the middle of the trail. The trail is slushy, your feet are wet. You know, that it's getting darker and colder soon.
Perhaps you understand, that some hikers capitulated yet, and much more are thinking about terminating this torture as soon as possible.

Stell Dir vor, Du marschierst schon seit 9 Stunden. Seit 4 Stunden klatscht Dir Schneeregen ins Gesicht. Du bist immer noch nicht an der Raststation angekommen, welche die Halbzeit markiert. Der Weg ist matschig, Du hast nasse Füße, und Du weißt, dass es bald wieder dunkel und noch kälter wird.
Dann verstehst Du, dass die ersten schon an einer der Labestationen aufgegeben haben, wo es zwischendurch heißen Tee gibt. Und die meisten anderen denken inzwischen darüber nach:

Nicht denken, einfach weiter. Dennoch werden zwei Drittel der 1.200 Starterinnen und Starter zwei Stunden später in Apetlon (nach 60 Kilometern, auf der Hälfte der Strecke) aufgeben. Österreichs bester Trail-Runner dazu: "60 km in nassen Schuhen sind nicht lustig. Aber bei schönem Wetter kann ja jeder.":
