Juni 1941 die Sowjetunion angriff, trat Finnland in Kooperation mit Deutschland in den Krieg ein, der in Finnland als Fortsetzungskrieg bezeichnet wird. Die finnische Armee eroberte nicht nur die verlorenen Gebiete zurück, sondern drang auch tief in das zur Sowjetunion gehörige Gebiet Ostkareliens ein. Am Timmelsjoch (italienisch Passo del Rombo), einem Grenzpass zwischen Österreich (Tirol) und Italien (Südtirol) auf einer Höhe von etwa 2472 Metern über NN.
Auf dem Timmelsjoch verläuft die Grenze zwischen Österreich und Italien.
Der Name ist abgeleitet vom rätoromanischen Wort „Tömbl“, eine Bezeichnung für einen kleinen Hügel (gemeint sind aber nicht das Joch und die Berge, sondern die vielen kleinen durch Gletscher gebildeten Steinhügel).
Urkundlich wird der Pass erstmals 1241 als „Thymels“ erwähnt, 1320 wurde ein Saumweg angelegt.
Um 1770 ist die Bezeichnungen „Timbl Ioch“ bezeugt.
Seit dem „Friedensvertrag von St. Germain“ 1920 verläuft über das Joch die Grenze zwischen Italien und Österreich, wobei vorläufig jeglicher Grenzverkehr verboten war.
Im April und Mai 1945 kehrten hier zahlreiche Soldaten der deutschen Wehrmacht aus Italien zurück in das Ötztal.
Zwischen 1955 und 1959 wurde die befestigte Strasse auf der österreichischen Seite gebaut (Baukosten 28 Millionen Schilling, was heute etwa dem 14 Millionen Euro entspricht), die Südseite (Italien) war unter Mussolini bereits 1933 bis zwei Kilometer vor das Joch als Militärstrasse erstellt worden.
Erst 1968 wurde das letzte Verbindungsstück fertiggestellt und am 15. September 1968 offiziell für den Verkehr freigegeben.
Die für den motorisierten Verkehr mautpflichtige, aber LKW-freie Strasse ist in der Regel von Mitte Juni bis Mitte Oktober von 7 bis 20 Uhr geöffnet.

These are some of the 40,000 basalt columns that make up the main formations at Giant's Causeway. The Causeway is on the north coast of County Antrim in Northern Ireland and is a popular tourist destination. Interestingly, when we lived in Northern Ireland in the 90's there were many fewer visitors, no visitors' center and no fees. Now there is huge visitors' center, busses to the Causeway, and parking fees to accommodate the thousands of visitors. The name refers to an Irish legend about the formation of the Causeway by a giant named Finn McCool - according to the legend he tore up and threw into the sea massive chunks of the coast in order to make a causeway to Scotland (which has similar coastal formations) so that he could fight the Scottish giant Benandonner. We were at the Causeway twice during our recent trip, once by way of a Sunday walk and a second time to accommodate a visitor.

Giant's Causeway is a major tourist attraction on the north coast of County Antrim in Northern Ireland. It is the site of 40,000 hexagonal basalt columns formed as a result of ancient volcanic activity. The name refers to a legend about its formation, i.e., the Irish giant, Finn McCool, tore up and threw its rocks into the sea to make a Causeway over Scotland (which has similar coastal formations) in order too fight the Scottish giant, Benandonner. The photo was taken from the path on the Cliffs above and shows some of the many visitors, though a large number had left because of rain.
