The caterpillars have been munching through the sacrificial nasturtiums we planted for them, and have mostly left everything else alone.

The butterflies are usually very skittish, but this one tolerated me poking my macro lens in its face for a while before flying off.

Seine Flügelspannweite ist ca. 28 bis 32 mm (relativ kleiner Schmetterling),er hat ein warmes Rostbraun bis Orange. Auf den Oberseiten der Flügel befinden sich hellere, gelbliche Flecken. Männchen haben zudem einen dunkelbraunen, strichförmigen Duftschuppenfleck auf den Vorderflügeln.Ein auffallend breiter, „pelziger“ Kopf mit weit auseinanderstehenden Augen sowie Fühler mit charakteristisch gebogenen Spitzen.Man entdeckt ihn von Mai bis August und er saugt Nektar von verschiedenen Blüten :))

Its wingspan is approximately 28 to 32 mm (a relatively small butterfly), and it has a warm rust-brown to orange coloration. Lighter, yellowish spots are present on the upper sides of the wings. Males also have a dark brown, linear scent patch on the forewings. It has a strikingly broad, "furry" head with widely spaced eyes and antennae with characteristically curved tips. It can be found from May to August and feeds on nectar from various flowers. :))

Son envergure est d'environ 28 à 32 mm (un papillon relativement petit), et sa coloration varie du brun rouille à l'orange. Des taches jaunâtres plus claires sont présentes sur le dessus des ailes. Les mâles possèdent également une tache odorante linéaire brun foncé sur les ailes antérieures. Sa tête, large et duveteuse, est remarquable, avec des yeux bien écartés et des antennes aux extrémités caractéristiques recourbées. On peut l'observer de mai à août ; il se nourrit du nectar de diverses fleurs. :))

Les ailes sont généralement jaune paille, beige ou brun clair, souvent striées de fines rayures longitudinales plus foncées. Cette coloration leur assure un camouflage parfait parmi les brins d'herbe sèche ! Leur envergure est d'environ 30 à 38 mm. Crépusculaires et nocturnes, elles restent parfaitement camouflées dans la végétation durant la journée. On les trouve dans les prairies humides et sèches, en bord de route, dans les pâturages et les prairies herbeuses. Elles se nourrissent du nectar des fleurs. :))

Dieser recht große, auffällig gefärbte Tagfalter kann im Juli in Wiesen beobachtet werden. Es ist der Kleine Perlmuttfalter (Issoria lathonia), dessen Raupe sich von Acker-Stiefmütterchen ernährt. Er ist (noch) nicht gefährdet.

This fairly large, strikingly coloured butterfly can be seen in meadows in July. It is the Queen of Spain fritillary (Issoria lathonia), whose caterpillar feeds on field pansies. It is not (yet) endangered.

The Northern Pearly Eye lives almost entirely in the shade of the woods so it is not often that I see it. It is not colourful, and is well camouflaged, but I find the markings on the wings very appealing. It feeds mostly on tree sap, fungi and dung, rarely visiting flowers, while the caterpillars eat grasses and sedges. (Lethe anthedon, named after the Underworld river of forgetfulness, Lethe, and a Greek nymph. Anthedon).

Es war sonnig und warm, aber sehr windig, als ich diesen Segelfalter (Iphiclides podalirius) auf diesem Schmetterlingsstrauch (Buddleja) fand. Gut festgekrallt trotzte er den Windböen. Seit den letzten Jahren finde ich immer wieder diese Tagfalterart, die vor Jahren noch eine ansolute Rarität war. Offenbar sind Segelfalter Profiteure des Klimawandels.

It was sunny and warm but very windy when I found this Scarce Swallowtail (Iphiclides podalirius) on a butterfly bush. Firmly clinging on, it defied the gusts of wind. In recent years I’ve been encountering this butterfly species again and again, whereas years ago it was still an absolute rarity. Apparently, Scarce Swallowtails are beneficiaries of climate change.

Seine Flügel sind leuchtend orange-braun mit schwarzen, braunen und gelben Flecken.Die Flügelränder sind extrem stark gezackt und wirken fast wie "angefressen". Das ist eine perfekte Tarnung: Sitzt der Falter mit geschlossenen Flügeln im Gebüsch, sieht er aus wie ein trockenes, welkes Blatt.Seinen Namen verdankt er einer kleinen, weißen Zeichnung auf den ansonsten dunkelbraunen Flügelunterseiten, die wie der Buchstabe C aussieht :))

Its wings are a bright orange-brown with black, brown, and yellow spots. The wing edges are extremely jagged and look almost "eaten." This is perfect camouflage: when the moth sits in the bushes with its wings closed, it looks like a dry, withered leaf. It owes its name to a small, white marking on the otherwise dark brown undersides of its wings, which looks like the letter C :))

Ses ailes sont d'un brun orangé vif, tachetées de noir, de brun et de jaune. Leurs bords sont extrêmement dentelés et semblent presque « rongés ». C'est un camouflage parfait : lorsque le papillon se pose dans les buissons, ailes repliées, il ressemble à une feuille morte desséchée. Il doit son nom à une petite marque blanche sur le dessous de ses ailes, par ailleurs brun foncé, qui ressemble à la lettre C :))

Bei einer Wanderung entdeckte ich diesen kleinen farbenprächtigen Schwärmer, der mit hoher Geschwindigkeit die Blüten eines Schmetterlingstrauches (Buddleja) zum Saugen von Nektar besuchte. Es handelte sich um den Hummelschwärmer (Hemaris fuciformis), einem bei uns in Franken recht seltenen Schwärmer, der tagaktiv ist. Für mich war es der Erstfund. Im PiP sind mehr Einzelheiten zu sehen.

Whilst out walking, I spotted this small, colourful hawk-moth, which was darting at high speed between the flowers of a butterfly bush (Buddleja) to feed on nectar. It was the Broad‑bordered Bee hawk-moth (Hemaris fuciformis), a species of hawk-moth that is quite rare here in Franconia and is active during the day. This was my first record of the species. More details can be seen in the PiP.

Bläulinge (Lycaenidae) fliegen schon herum :)) Blue butterflies (Lycaenidae) are already flying around :)) Les papillons bleus (Lycaenidae) volent déjà dans les environs :))

Diesen Segelfalter (Iphiclides podalirius) fand ich auf einer Luzernenwiese in der Nähe meines Heimatortes. Bei genauerem Hinsehen sieht man, dass das rechte "Schwänzchen" und ein Teil des rechten Hinterflügels fehlt, also abgepickt wurde. Der Falter hat wahrscheinlich den Angriff eines Vogels überlebt. Segelfalter gelten als die schönsten europäischen Tagfalter. Sie waren in den vergangenen Jahren als sehr bedroht eingestuft. Inzwischen habe sich aber z.B. in Franken stellenweise stabile Populationen gebildet. Eine erfreuliche Entwicklung.

I found this Scarce Swallowtail (Iphiclides podalirius) in an alfalfa meadow near my hometown. On closer inspection you can see that the right “tail” and part of the right hindwing are missing, clearly pecked off. So the butterfly survived a bird attack. Scarce Swallowtails are considered the most beautiful Europea butterflies. In recent years they were classified as highly endangered. In the meantime, however, stable populations have formed in some regions, for example in Franconia. A pleasing development.

Bei mir im Garten gefunden: Ein prächtiges Weibchen vom Hauhechel-Bläuling (Polyommatus icarus), einer bei uns häufigen Bläulingsart, die von April bis Oktober fliegt und pro Jahr bis zu 3 Generationen ausbildet. Die Männchen sind auf der Unterseite im Grundton leicht grau gefärbt. Der Schmetterling im Bild saugt an einer Blüte der Färberkamille (Cota tinctoria), die im Moment blüht.

Found in my garden: a magnificent female Common Blue (Polyommatus icarus), a butterfly species that is widespread here, flying from April to October and producing up to three generations per year. The males show a slightly greyish ground tone on the underside. The butterfly in the photo is feeding on a blossom of Golden Marguerite (Cota tinctoria), which is currently in bloom.
