Small drift coal mines in the Hegang area of northern China. There are two drifts in the centre of this view which is best viewed large. The dirt rucks in the background belong to the larger deep mines.

600mm gauge electric locomotive at the Dalu coal mine in Hegang, Heilongjiang province, China. This is one of a number that were supplied to the Hegang Mining Administration from the (Shaoshan) Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Works (now CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive) in Hunan Province.

Conveyor runs and associated coal processing buildings at Donghaikuang Colliery in the Jixi area of Heilongjiang, China. Judging by Google Maps all this has now been cleared away. Things change very fast in China.

Early morning light as consecutively numbered QJs 7038 and 7037 storm up the west side of the Jinpeng Pass. It was always worth getting up early on the Jitong Railway.

The Jiayang coal railway was a rare survivor of a narrow gauge line that continued to serves a whole community. The recent development of new roads in the area it serves has reduced its significance but it has renewed itself as a tourist line.

Back when the coal mines were still operating a passenger service is departing from the reversing point at Mifengyang. The pointsman is reaching to remove the green signal flag from its holder.

With temperatures hovering around -40C the opencast coal mine at Jalainur was filled with the exhaust steam from the fleet of SY class locomotives that worked there.

Coal for the washery

Whilst the Jalainur opencast coal mine supplied the majority of the coal handled by the adjacent washery, there was also traffic from the nearby deep mines. Deflector fitted SY 1416 is here bringing in a trainload from the Tiebeikuang mine.

The winding towers and coal bunkers of the Guangshan Mine at Beipiao viewed across a large area of workers' housing under demolition. The mine is now also abandoned.

Sanbao loading

The screens building and rail loading area at at the Sanbao colliery, Liaoning Province, China. At first glance it looked to be closed but the presence of loaded wagons told another story. The mines in this area were extensively developed by the Japanese during their occupation in the 1930s and early 1940s. All now demolished.

SY 1299 at the head of the afternoon passenger service on the Sanjiazi branch of the Nanpiao Coal Railway. This is the stop at Shaguotun where access to the platform requires walking alongside the track and crossing a siding. On this day it was running as a mixed train with two wagons of rails immadiately behind the locomotive.

Midwinter snows at the Xingyang brickworks in Henan Province. This large Hoffman kiln was firing roofing tiles during the warmer months but was laid off during the winter.
