Penzance School of Art and Free Library, designed by Silvanus Trevail, was opened in March 1881. The Grade II listed building was financed by the gift of land and other donations. During the late 1880s there was remodelling of the façade, and a museum and science school were added, all designed by Henry White FRIBA, a former student. The school is currently run by Penwith College but the library closed in 2016.

Slate has been quarried at Delabole for over 1,000 years and during that time it is estimated that 10 million tons of stone have been removed.

In 1842 The Old Delabole Slate Company was formed and successfully secured all the freehold rights to the quarry thus bringing a series of separate operation together for the first time. Soon over 1000 men, women and boys were working the stone here. Today the work is undertaken with just five quarrymen and the use of large machines.

The quarry, which was once the largest man-made hole in Europe, is now almost 500 feet deep and over 1.5 miles around.

Fishing vessel PS82 'Isabella' lies against the fish quay at Padstow. Formerly SY30 'Louisa', this creel fishing vessel sank off the Isle of Mingulay in April 2016 with the loss of three lives.

The town gasworks at Hayle was built in 1888 and the last relic is the former showrooms which still proudly advertises its former ownership in a mosaic over the door.

The 2ft 6in gauge Pentewan Railway brought china clay to the small harbour at Pentewan from 1830 until 1818 when the locomotives and track materials were requisitioned by the War Department. This was not the end or railways at Pentewan and W Lamb & Sons continued to operate a concrete block manufacturing works using sea sand obtained from the beach and head of the St Austell River at Pentewan. This business continued until 1966 when the Pentewan Dock & Concrete Co Ltd ceased operations. The block business used its own 2ft 6in gauge lines to carry sand to the works and employed diesel locomotives after 1930. The last operations used a Ruston & Hornsby diesel.

Today there are still remnants of track to be found at Pentewan, including this turnout and in the background is what I believe to have been the shed for the diesel locomotive.

Situated on a minor side road between St Day and Chacewater, I only re-discovered them when sent on a detour due to a road closure. I don't know their names. Perhaps worth viewing on large for detail of the stonework.

The path down starts at the bottom of the photo, left hand corner and it's not for the faint hearted! So it's mercifully free of the summer hordes! Although surfers like it here and can swamp the place if the conditions suit them.

Typical of the granite coastal areas in Cornwall. This was a surprisingly warm and sunny March day. I only came here on a whim and couldn't have been luckier with the weather. Both before and after had seen weeks of dreary grey skies.
