Au fond on voit le Fort National, construit en 1689 par Vauban pour assurer la protection de Saint-Malo. Lorsque le drapeau est hissé, le site est libre pour la visite qui se fait en fonction des marées (accès à marée basse uniquement).

Notre-Dame d’Avesnières was built in the 11th and 12th centuries in the Romanesque style. In the 19th century, it was elevated to the status of a basilica, and a bell tower combining Gothic and Renaissance styles was added to top the roof. It houses a rich collection of statues. I was impressed by the 3.50-metre-tall statue of Saint Christopher (16th century, on the right in the collage).

BANC DOUBLE DANS LA COUR DE L'EGLISE. Notre-Dame d’Avesnières a été construite aux XIe et XIIe siècles, dans un style roman. Au XIX siècle elle est élevée au rang de basilique, et un clocher mêlant les styles gothique et Renaissance vient compléter le toit. Elle renferme un riche ensemble de statues. J'étais impressionnée par Saint Christophe (XVIe) avec ses 3,50 m de haut (à droite dans le collage).

DOPPELBANK AUF DEM KIRCHHOF. Notre-Dame d’Avesnières wurde im 11. und 12. Jh. im romanischen Stil erbaut. Im 19. Jh. wurde sie zur Basilika erhoben, und ein Glockenturm, der Elemente des gotischen und des Renaissance-Stils vereint, vervollständigt das Dach. Sie enthält eine reichhaltige Sammlung von Statuen. Besonders beeindruckt hat mich der 3,50 m hohe Heilige Christophorus aus dem 16. Jh. (rechts in der Collage).

Die meisten Häuser in Grönland sind auf Fels gebaut/aufgeständert und werden durch Holztreppen erschlossen. Damit sind sie im Winter trotz Schnee noch zugänglich und im Sommer versinken sie nicht in Schlamm/ auftauendem Permafrost. Orte ohne felsigen Untergrund bekommen wegen des Klimawandels zunehmend Probleme.

Per arrivare là si parte da questo incrocio e si scende in basso a sinistra. Dopo qualche centinaio di metri si apre il sentiero della foto principale.

Salto Floriano is one of the most spectacular falls on the Brazilian side of Iguazú (the falls in the background are in Argentina).
The first note was taken from the topmost viewpoint, the second from the lower viewpoint.

Smoky sunrise (Larchmont, New York)—July 17, 2026

Wildfire smoke transformed the rising sun into a muted disc suspended behind a dense atmospheric veil. Its usual brilliance was subdued, filtered through layers of drifting particulate matter that softened the horizon and stained the morning light with tones of amber, rust, and ash.

This photo captures a moment of unsettling beauty. The sun remains visible, yet distant and diminished, its radiance constrained by smoke carried far from the fires that produced it. What first appears serene is also evidence of disruption: a sunrise reshaped by wildfire, distance, wind, and a changing climate.

The cemetery at Upernavik sits on top of a hill and looks out to the sea (as do all Inuit cemeteries). Because of permafrost the coffins are above ground and cemented in. This can only be done in the short summer season so the cement mixer pragmatically stays on site.

Gentoo penguins are the 3rd largest species of penguin. They breed on the Antarctic peninsula and on Subantarctic islands, using snow free areas to build their nest of stones. Often the nests lie quite high up and the birds have to struggle uphill. Downwards they like to toboggan on their bellies;-)

These photos are from Peterman Island where all 3 species of pygoscelis can be watched (apart from gentoo also Adelie/ Pygoscelis adeliae and chinstrap/Pygoscelis antarcticus). Visitors should keep their distance and never block the birds' way to the sea.

These guard posts were part of the defensive system put in place by Louis XVI to deter forces landing from British warships, which often sailed close to the shore. The collage shows the sunset near the small bay of Dahouët.

LE VIEUX POSTE DE DOUANE, vu à travers des lunettes roses ;-)) Ce corps de garde est construit en 1744 et situé sur le sentier de randonnée GR 34. Ces postes de garde faisaient partie du système défensif mis en place par Louis XVI afin de dissuader les forces débarquant des navires de guerre anglais, qui naviguaient souvent près du rivage. Le collage montre le coucher de soleil près de la petite baie de Dahouët.

DAS ALTE ZOLLHÄUSCHEN, durch eine rosarote Brille gesehen ;-)) Dieser Wachposten wurde 1744 erbaut und liegt am Wanderweg GR 34. Diese Wachposten waren Teil des von Ludwig XVI. errichteten Verteidigungssystems, das dazu diente, die Truppen abzuschrecken, die von englischen Kriegsschiffen an Land gingen, die oft nahe der Küste kreuzten. Die Collage zeigt den Sonnenuntergang in der Nähe der kleinen Bucht von Dahouët.
