Der Río Bío Bío, auch Biobío, ist der zweitlängste Fluss in Chile. Er ist 380 Kilometer lang.

Er verläuft etwa 500 Kilometer südlich von Santiago de Chile. Er entspringt dem Galletue-See in den Anden. Er fließt bei San Pedro de la Paz in den Golf von Arauco.

Auf den ersten Kilometern, wo er auch das Wasser des Río Rucanuco, des Ausflusses des Icalma-Sees, aufnimmt, fließt der Río Bío Bío nach Osten hin zum Hauptkamm der Anden. Bald ändert sich der Flusslauf nach Norden. Im Mittellauf wechselt der Verlauf mehr nach Nordwesten der Mündung in den Pazifik zu.

The origin of the river's name is disputed. According to one account, "Biobío" echoes the call of the white-crested elaenia, a small bird common along its banks. An older, competing explanation traces the name to the Mapudungun words huihui or vyivyi, which early Spanish missionaries recorded as meaning the sound made by gentle waves as they break; Spanish colonists are said to have altered the pronunciation into "Bío-Bío." Indigenous inhabitants are also said to have referred to the river as Vutanleuvu, or "Great River."

A lot of people can see shapes in clouds (I think it's called pareidolia). These made me think of ocean waves breaking in a storm.

I've cheated a bit by altering the contrast - the sky was really a much lighter shade of blue.

No one knows how long there has been a church at Downham. During the rebuilding of 1910 traces of what were believed to be early Norman or Anglo- Saxon foundations were unearthed. The presence, within the parish, of a field called Kirkacre - a pure Saxon word - adds credence to an estimate of 1,000 years. The church, with fifteenth century tower and main body of 1910, stands at the top of the steep main street of the village in a perfect and harmonious grouping with Downham Hall.

A handsome gamebird, the pheasant is an introduced species that has settled here with little problem. It can be spotted in its farmland and woodland habitats, although you'll probably hear the loud, croaking call of the male before you see it.
