Gestern bei einer Wanderung über die Felder fand ich viele Gefleckte Wiesenschnaken (Nephrotoma appendiculata) in Paarung. Als Kopulationspaar flogen sie immer wieder auf und flogen eine kurze Strecke. Diese Schnakenart kommt in fast ganz Europa vor. Ihre Larven können durch Wurzelfraß in Pflanzenkulturen schädlich sein.

Yesterday, while hiking across the fields, I found many spotted crane flies (Nephrotoma appendiculata) in mating pairs. As a copulating pair, they repeatedly took off and flew a short distance. This species of crane fly occurs in almost all of Europe. Their larvae can be harmful to cultivated plants by feeding on the roots.

Ein ziemlich seltenes Bild: Ein Pärchen vom Silbergrünen Bläuling (Lysandra coridon) in Paarung. Bei der Kopulation sind meistens die Flügel angelegt und man sieht die Färbung und Strukturen der Unterseite, die für die Artbestimmung wichtig sind. Das Männchen ist rechts, also das blassere Individuum, das Weibchen links, wesentlich farbenprächtiger, allerdings fehlt die silberblaue Farbe der Behaarung und der Flügelbasis. Im vorherigen Bild habe ich schon einmal ein Artportrait gezeigt.

A fairly rare picture: A pair of chalkhill blue (Lysandra coridon) mating. During copulation, the wings are usually folded and you can see the colouring and structures of the underside, which are important for species identification. The male is on the right - the paler individual - and the female is on the left, much more colorful. However, the silvery-blue coloration of the hair and the wing base is missing. In the previous picture, I already showed a species portrait.

Versteckt im Wiesengras fand ich dieses Pärchen vom Gefleckten Schmalbock (Rutpela maculata), das sich intensiv dem Fortpflanzungsgeschäft widmete. Hoffentlich erfolgreich, denn auch die Zahl der Käfer geht in Deutschland merklich zurück.

Hidden in the grass I found this pair of spotted longhorn (Rutpela maculata) intensively breeding. Hopefully with success, as the number of beetles in Germany is declining noticeably.

Das recht häufig in Europa vorkommende Kleine Wiesenvögelchen (Coenonympha pamphilus) wird auch als Kleiner Heufalter bezeichnet, weil es in allen möglichen Graslandschaften vorkommt. Man kann die Tagfalter vom Frühjahr bis in den Herbst beobachten. Die Eiablage erfolgt an vielen Grasarten, die Raupe überwintert. Im Bild ein Pärchen in Kopulation auf einer Blüte der Kartäusernelke (Dianthus carthusianorum). Der größere Schmetterling ist das Weibchen, der deutlich kleinere ist das Männchen.

The Small heath (Coenonympha pamphilus) is quite common in Europe and occurs in all kinds of grassland. You can observe these butterflies from spring to autumn. Eggs are laid on many grass species and the caterpillar hibernates. The photo shows a couple in copulation on a flower of the Carthusian Pink (Dianthus carthusianorum). The larger butterfly is the female, the significantly smaller one is the male.

Eigentlich ist die Streifenwanze (Graphosoma italicum), wie schon der lateinische Artname andeutet, eine Insektenart aus dem Mittelmeerraum. Allerdings hat sich ihre Ausbreitungsgrenze mittlerweile, wohl bedingt durch die Klimaveränderung, bis nach Südschweden ausgedehnt. "Die Kommunikation der sehr vereinzelt lebenden Tiere zum Zusammenfinden der Paare erfolgt über akustische Schmalband-Signale, die durch Bauchvibrationen erzeugt und über die Pflanze weiter geleitet werden" (wikipedia, s.u.) und nicht wie bei anderen Insekten über optische oder geruchliche Signale. Sie ist ein friedlicher, völlig harmloser Pflanzensauger.

The striped bug (Graphosoma italicum) is actually an insect species from the Mediterranean region, as the Latin species name suggests. However, its distribution limits have now extended as far as southern Sweden, probably due to climate change. "The communication of the very solitary living animals to get together in pairs takes place via acoustic narrow-band signals, which are generated by abdominal vibrations and transmitted via the plant" (wikipedia, see below) and not via visual or odour signals as with other insects. It is a peaceful, completely harmless plant sucker.

Auf einem kleinen Busch in einer Wiese fand ich diese Ansammlung von Insekten: Blattläuse, die Pflanzensäfte zur Ernährung saugen (s. Notiz 1), zwei Marienkäfer, gerade kopulierend (Notiz 2), welche am Tag ca. Hundert Blattläuse fressen und Ameisen (s. Notiz 3), welche die zuckerhaltigen Ausscheidungen der Blattläuse sammeln und deshalb "ihre" Blattläuse vor den Marienkäfern verteidigen (s. Notiz 4). Im Bild steht eine Ameise mit weit geöffneten Kieferzangen drohend vor den beiden Marienkäfern. Im Laufe ihrer Entwicklung verspeisen Marienkäfer bis zu 600 Blattläuse und spielen deshalb in der biologischen Schädlingsbekämpfung eine sehr große Rolle.

On a small bush in a meadow I found this collection of insects: aphids sucking plant juices for nourishment (see note 1), two ladybugs, just copulating (note 2), which eat about a hundred aphids a day and ants (see note 3), which collect the sugary excreta of the aphids and therefore defend "their" aphids from the ladybugs (see note 4). In the picture, an ant with its mandibles wide open stands threateningly in front of the two ladybugs. In the course of their development, ladybugs eat up to 600 aphids and therefore play a very important role in biological pest control.
