This is an "antique" radio that was being displayed at the HamVention event. It is a product of Collins, a major manufacturer of radios in times past.

Quite a collectible item, if you are into such equipment. Many antique radios like this are in current use.

And yes, it was for sale.

Salt Production (BW)

In Namibia, during our 2018 world cruise.

The saltworks. The shallow ponds that surround this area cause the slow drying of the sea and the creation of the salt crystals. Those are gathered up and become these white piles. The salt is then taken out of Namibia by the ships in port that are shown in another photo.

We had a good chance to walk around the rebuilt downtown of Napier, New Zealand. The Art Deco work is justly remarkable.

Heavy Weather in South Dakota

We were awakened by the weather radio warning a few nights ago. The rain had passed, and when we looked out, we saw a huge lightning display in the sky (no ground strikes, thank you).

This video is made up of phone video, combined with selected stills of actual cloud-to-cloud lightning bolts.

They flashed so quickly, that I was able to isolate only one frame (50 fps) for most of the bolts.

Seen along the highway in Montana. Those fences are snow fences, intended to keep the railroad tracks clear.

Taken from our RV as we drove parallel to the rail line; so it needed a lot of work in GIMP to correct the colors.

PiP shows a typical train that we saw on these tracks.

Various yellow (ish) items seen at the local Fair. The top one is a squash as part of the vegetable competition, the rubber ducks were part of a carnival skill test, and the big lemon is a lemonade stand.

Delicate Arch at Sunrise

We did not hike up to Delicate Arch; the folks you see in the photo, did. We were at the viewpoint far down in the valley. Used the maximum telephoto with my Panasonic GX85.

The rising sun has just touched 2/3's of the Arch. Some of the photographers on the mountain still have their tripods set up.

Each moment was a different view, as the sun lit various parts of the scene.

Image processed with GIMP. Oh yes, 600mm equivalent Panasonic zoom telephoto. There was a very nice log railing all around the viewpoint area, which I used as a "tripod".

Fortunately, I had my telephoto lens, and could capture this image of a rock climber, working his way up the sheer rock wall of the Devils Tower.

The PiP is a more general view of the base of the Tower.

Historic building near the pier in Astoria, Oregon. There were many immigrants in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, primarily due to the lumber industry.

This building survived the construction of the huge bridge over the Columbia River.

We had excellent weather in southern Missouri for the eclipse on 8 April, 2024.

Our previous experience was in 2017, and while the photos were wonderful, I never got a shot at the "diamond ring" effect that year.

This, and a few others, were taken at the end of totality this April.

The large flare at the very bottom of the disk was seen in a number of our photos.

Hand-held at 280mm equivalent zoom, and processed with GIMP. This was the same camera-lens I used in 2017 (nearly the same settings, too.)

World's Smallest Toilet? (or most narrow?)

Spotted this very narrow comfort facility at the Panama Canal (top of photo). This is used by the workers who are located on the small "islands" between the locks. You can even see the fellow washing his hands near the door.

Taken on our cruise of South America in 2008. The "mules" on the tracks in the foreground are used to help center the ships as they transit the canal locks. The tall structure on the very right is part of the fire-fighting equipment of the Canal.

Fall Colors (H.A.N.W.E.)

Taken as we reached the summit of the Cumbres and Toltec Railroad. The line runs between Chama, New Mexico, and Antonito, Colorado. The summit is near 10,000 feet. The aspens (and others) were displaying remarkable colors.

Some of the blur is the motion of the train, some of the blur is bokeh.

For the Sunday Challenge, this is a nice way to enjoy the change of seasons. Winter will be along soon enough. At least the conifers in the background will stay green throughout the seasons.
